Two years into Steam Early Access and Moon Studios is not letting up. The developer behind No Rest for the Wicked just dropped a Steam blog post marking the game's second Early Access anniversary, confirming it has sold 1.7 million copies and reaffirming that 1.0 is still very much the destination.
What Moon Studios actually said
"It's been TWO YEARS since No Rest for the Wicked entered Early Access," the studio wrote in the post. “Since then, this game has grown and evolved in ways we could only pull off because of you. You've supported us, challenged us, and pushed us to do better. That's exactly how we like it.” No grand announcements. No roadmap drop. Just a confident, direct statement from a studio that knows it has player goodwill behind it and intends to spend it wisely. "We're building something special here, and we're not slowing down."
The console tease that everyone noticed
Buried at the end of the post, Moon Studios slipped in a line that will have console players paying attention: "And console players, we haven't forgotten you."
Here's the thing: this isn't the first signal pointing that direction. Earlier this year, CEO and creative director Thomas Mahler posted and then quickly deleted a video of No Rest for the Wicked running on Nintendo Switch 2. The clip disappeared fast, but the internet doesn't forget. Put that alongside the anniversary post's wording, and a console release looks increasingly like a when, not an if.
What most players miss is the structural implication here. Both Nintendo and Sony block Early Access games from their platforms. So if a console port is coming, a 1.0 launch has to come with it. The tease isn't just about hardware, it's effectively a 1.0 confirmation in slow motion.
danger
A console release for No Rest for the Wicked would require a full 1.0 launch first, since neither Nintendo nor Sony currently allow Early Access titles on their storefronts.
1.7 million copies is a real number
Two years is a long time to stay in Early Access. Some games use that window as a soft launch and coast. Moon Studios has been actively building, with the co-op update earlier this year sending No Rest for the Wicked to the top of the Steam charts, beating out Arc Raiders, Marvel Rivals, and Helldivers 2 at the time.
1.7 million copies sold without a 1.0 release, without a console audience, and without any battle passes or microtransactions (Mahler has been famously vocal about keeping it that way) is a strong foundation.
Where the game goes from here
Moon Studios hasn't put a date on 1.0 or named any specific platforms for the console port. The anniversary post was deliberately light on specifics, which is either disciplined communication or a sign they're not ready to commit publicly yet.
The key here is that the studio's stated ambition has always been ambitious. Mahler has previously said he wants to "repeat" the Early Access-to-launch success of Baldur's Gate 3 and then keep growing the game the way Minecraft or Fortnite have over years. That's a high bar, but 1.7 million copies in Early Access at least puts them in the conversation.
For players who have been along for the ride, our gaming news around No Rest for the Wicked keeps pointing toward a big finish. For anyone still on the fence, the console port announcement, whenever it comes, will be the moment to jump in. You'll want to keep an eye on Moon Studios' Steam page for the next update, because based on the deleted Switch 2 clip and the anniversary messaging, it probably isn't far off.
