Outbreak: Shades of Horror just got a major update from Dead Drop Studios, and it's the kind of change that actually matters: full cross-platform multiplayer and Xbox Play Anywhere support. You can now jump between Xbox consoles and Windows PCs without losing progress, picking up right where you left off. Julia Wolbach, Co-Founder and COO at Dead Drop Studios, also confirmed the addition of Sakura Ridge, a new seasonal area that expands the zombie-infested streets of Cypress Ridge with fresh locations and challenges.

Cross-platform play makes co-op sessions easier
The update lets you squad up with three other players for online raids through Xbox Live, no matter which platform they're on. You can also tackle campaigns like Chromatic Split: Enhanced Edition on handheld devices if that's your thing. Photo Mode works across all platforms too, so you can freeze-frame the chaos whenever you want. The real benefit here is simple: your friends don't need to own the same hardware to play together anymore.
Sakura Ridge mixes cherry blossoms with zombie hordes
The Spring update drops a new map called Sakura Ridge, where scenic cherry trees clash with the usual undead nightmare. Invasion Mode puts you on civilian protection duty, forcing you to hold positions and survive increasingly nasty waves of zombies. Raid Mode flips the script, making you race to evacuation points while enemy difficulty ramps up the longer you stay alive. The new map adds some visual variety to Cypress Ridge and throws in fresh strategic wrinkles that change how you approach both modes.
Seasonal cosmetics return with new masks
This update includes seasonal cosmetics like character masks, unlocked through Seasonal Tickets you earn by completing challenges in the Cypress Reel hub. Past seasonal content, including maps like Wordy's Winter Wonderland, is still available, so you can go back and grab rewards you missed. The cosmetic system keeps adding reasons to revisit older content instead of locking it away forever.
Story Mode is coming as a free update
Dead Drop Studios is working on a new Story Mode that will feature larger maps with branching paths, narrative missions, and new gameplay systems. If you already own Outbreak: Shades of Horror, you'll get the Story Mode update for free when it launches. It's a big expansion of the game's survival horror foundation, adding structure and story beats to what's currently a more open-ended experience.
Retro survival horror with modern conveniences
Outbreak: Shades of Horror pulls heavily from 1990s and early 2000s survival horror design. Inventory space is tight, resources are scarce, and combat punishes careless play. You start at the Cypress Reel theater and work your way through a city overrun by zombies, balancing missions, side campaigns, and mini-games while managing limited ammo and healing items. Additional campaigns like Trials of Hank and the enhanced prologue Chromatic Split: Enhanced Edition add more narrative threads and gameplay variety to the core loop.
Seasonal events keep the challenge rotation fresh
The game runs seasonal and crossover events that bring themed decorations, limited-time maps, and exclusive rewards. Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Seasonal challenges hand out weapons, skins, and cosmetic items. These events give you reasons to keep playing beyond the main content, especially if you're chasing specific unlocks or just want something different to do each week.
