Sony has announced that PS5 Pro owners will soon receive an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the AI-based upscaling technology that enhances game visuals. The updated system is designed to improve image quality while keeping frame rates stable, offering a refined visual experience for players. PSSR has already been used on more than 50 PS5 Pro titles, but this latest iteration introduces a reworked neural network and algorithm for more precise pixel-by-pixel image analysis.
Resident Evil Requiem Launches with New PSSR
The first game to showcase the upgraded PSSR is Resident Evil Requiem, launching today. According to Masaru Ijuin from Capcom, the team focused on enhancing character detail through an upgraded RE Engine. Individual strands of hair and beard are rendered as polygons, allowing realistic movement influenced by motion and wind. Lighting also interacts dynamically with overlapping hair strands.
These detailed textures are normally challenging to upscale, but the improved PSSR processes them effectively, maintaining clarity and performance. Capcom highlighted that this allows for a more immersive horror experience, with subtle visual improvements that can be appreciated throughout gameplay.
Collaboration Between Sony and AMD
The new PSSR system is the result of Project Amethyst, a partnership between Sony and AMD. The technology builds on AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling used in PC gaming, but has been refined for the PS5 Pro over an additional six months. This ensures that console players benefit from the latest developments in AI-based upscaling.
Upcoming System Update and Expanded Game Support
Sony plans to release a system software update in March, allowing players to enable the upgraded PSSR for supported PS5 Pro titles via the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option in Settings. Multiple existing games are expected to receive updates to take advantage of the new technology, providing sharper graphics and improved detail clarity across the library.
