Sky Mavis Unveils bAXS with $135K Airdrop in Axie Infinity

Sky Mavis has rolled out a new in-game token called bAXS, or bonded AXS, in Axie Infinity. The launch comes with a $135,000 non-dilutive airdrop aimed at encouraging participation and reducing sell pressure within the game’s economy. Unlike most blockchain tokens, which are fully decentralized and freely transferable, bAXS introduces built-in restrictions that limit how it can be used and exchanged. This move reflects a broader effort by Sky Mavis to manage the Axie Infinity economy more sustainably.

How bAXS Works in Axie Infinity

bAXS is based on the Apptoken ERC-20C standard developed by Limit Break. The token maintains the same value as AXS and can be used for all the typical in-game activities, including staking to earn AXS, voting on governance decisions, paying for breeding, ascensions, and evolutions, forging materials, restoring Atia’s Blessing streaks, minting Runes and Charms, and purchasing a Codex Pass. The key difference is that bAXS cannot leave the Axie ecosystem. It is not supported on cryptocurrency exchanges, meaning players cannot freely trade it for other tokens or cash. To convert bAXS into liquid AXS, players must use an in-game exchange that applies a tax based on their Axie Score.

The Role of Axie Score and Taxation

The tax on exchanging bAXS is designed to encourage engagement and reduce opportunistic selling. Players with higher Axie Scores, calculated using factors such as NFT holdings, contributions to the treasury and community, and in-game performance, pay a lower conversion tax of 17.5%. Players with lower scores may face taxes as high as 85%. All taxed tokens are directed back into the Axie treasury, reinforcing the game’s internal economy and ensuring that rewards circulate within the ecosystem rather than being extracted by short-term sellers.

Non-Dilutive Airdrop to Reward Players

To kick off bAXS, Sky Mavis is distributing a total of 100,000 tokens through an airdrop valued at around $135,000. Eligible wallets must have at least 10 staked AXS tokens to receive the airdrop. Because bAXS cannot be immediately sold outside the ecosystem, the airdrop is considered non-dilutive, allowing Sky Mavis to reward players without creating downward pressure on the AXS token price. This approach demonstrates a controlled method for distributing in-game incentives while promoting active participation.

Implications for Blockchain Gaming

The introduction of bAXS represents a new approach to blockchain gaming token design. By combining in-game utility, pegged value, transfer restrictions, and a performance-based tax system, Sky Mavis is testing a more structured economic model. While it remains to be seen how players and the market will respond, the token is intended to encourage longer-term engagement and support a sustainable Axie Infinity economy. For players, it offers new ways to earn and use in-game rewards while limiting the negative effects of immediate token dumping.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is bAXS?
bAXS is a bonded version of the AXS token used in Axie Infinity. It has the same in-game functionality as AXS but cannot be freely traded outside the game.

How is bAXS different from AXS?
Unlike AXS, bAXS cannot be transferred on exchanges. Converting bAXS into AXS requires an in-game exchange and is subject to a tax based on a player’s Axie Score.

What can bAXS be used for?
Players can stake bAXS to earn AXS, vote on governance, pay for breeding and evolutions, forge materials, mint Runes and Charms, restore blessings, and buy Codex Passes.

How does the tax on bAXS work?
The tax depends on a player’s Axie Score. High-score players pay 17.5%, while low-score players may pay up to 85%. All taxed tokens go to the Axie treasury.

Who is eligible for the bAXS airdrop?
Wallets with at least 10 staked AXS tokens are eligible for the airdrop, which distributes a total of 100,000 bAXS tokens.

Why did Sky Mavis introduce bAXS?
The token is designed to reduce sell pressure, support the in-game economy, and reward active players without causing token dilution.
