Splitgate 2 is officially heading back to beta. Developer 1047 Games announced the move in a message to the community, admitting that the sequel launched too early and didn't deliver the polished, portal-powered action fans were expecting. Now, the team says it's taking the time to rework key systems and recenter the game around what made the original Splitgate stand out.

A rushed launch and lessons learned
1047 Games says the team's eagerness to get Splitgate 2 into players' hands resulted in a launch that fell short. The developers acknowledged they "bit off more than [they] could chew," releasing content before it was ready and misjudging what the community actually wanted. Core systems like progression, monetization, and classic game modes missed the mark, and players made their frustrations clear.
The game is now entering a new beta phase with substantial updates planned across nearly every aspect of the experience. That means a ground-up rebuild of the progression system, map redesigns that lean harder into the franchise's signature portals, and a simplified monetization approach. Classic modes that fans have been asking for are also coming, with more changes to be revealed soon.

Community feedback will shape the rebuild
The next phase of Splitgate 2's development centers on community input. 1047 Games says it's returning to its roots, both in gameplay and in how it engages with players. That means more playtests, more surveys, and more transparency about what's changing and why. The studio wants to strike the right balance between the original game's strengths and the new ideas behind the sequel, and it's relying on players to help steer that direction.
The team stressed that this isn't a quick fix. Rebuilding the game will take time, and they're asking for patience while they sort it out. Still, the developers say they remain committed to delivering the experience fans deserve and have no plans to abandon the project.

Staff cuts and server shutdowns
The shift in direction comes with some tough decisions. To reallocate resources toward the rework, 1047 Games has reduced several roles on the team. The studio called the move "heartbreaking" and confirmed that affected employees are receiving severance and job placement support. The hope is to bring them back once the studio is in a more stable position.
To retain as many developers as possible, the studio is also shutting down the servers for the original Splitgate in about a month. While the team would have preferred to keep the legacy servers running, the cost (estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past few years) isn't sustainable. As a potential workaround, they're exploring options for offline or peer-to-peer matches so players can still access that version of the game in some capacity.

Splitgate 2 remains playable, for now
Despite returning to beta, Splitgate 2 isn't going offline. Chapter 3 is still scheduled to launch, and the game will continue to receive bug fixes and high-priority updates. 1047 Games is encouraging players to keep playing and to keep the feedback flowing as they shape the future of the game together.
Splitgate has been in development for nearly a decade, starting as a dorm room project before becoming a standout competitive shooter. Now, with hard lessons learned and a clearer focus, the team is doubling down on what made it work in the first place. 1047 says they aren't giving up, and they don't plan to.
