Nintendo dropped a free Star Fox demo announcement during today's Nintendo Direct, and the best part is you don't have to wait. The demo went live on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop the same day as the Direct, giving players their first hands-on taste of the N64 classic's modern remake ahead of its June 25, 2026 release date.
Here's the thing: this isn't just a teaser clip or a store page update. You can actually download and play it right now.

What the demo actually includes
The demo covers the game's tutorial and one of the opening stages. Short, yes, but that's enough to get a real feel for how Nintendo has rebuilt this thing from the ground up. This isn't the 3DS port with a fresh resolution bump. Hands-on impressions describe it as a significantly expanded, cinematic retelling of the Lylat Wars, with new voice acting and cutscene direction that apparently hits harder than most Nintendo games have managed before.
The new trailer that accompanied the announcement ran through the full crew: Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare are all back. Vehicle variety looks wide too, with the Arwing aerospace fighter, the Landmaster ground assault tank, and the Blue Marine submersible all confirmed. Environments shown include Corneria, Fichina, Solar, Zoness, and Sector Y.
One feature worth flagging: the game supports split Joy-Con 2 co-op, where one player handles piloting and another takes over gunning. That's a genuinely interesting use of the hardware.
The Star Fox demo is available to download now through the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop at no cost.
The character redesigns are still dividing people
The demo also gives players a chance to finally form their own opinion on the updated character designs, which have been controversial since the game was first revealed. Takaya Imamura, the original creator of Star Fox, has publicly said he prefers how Fox McCloud looks in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie over this remake's design. That's a notable statement from the person who created the character.
Whether the redesigns land for you is a personal call, but the demo is the best way to see them in motion rather than judging from a trailer screenshot.

Star Fox Arwing gameplay
A franchise that keeps remaking its first chapter
Star Fox has a complicated history with remakes. The original game has been revisited multiple times now, and some fans have pushed back on Nintendo returning to the same material again. The 3DS version in 2011 was a direct remake. This new version is pitched as something more substantial, with an expanded script and production values that go well beyond a simple remaster.
The demo is the fastest way to judge for yourself whether this version earns its place. With the full game less than three weeks out, the timing makes sense as a way to build momentum going into launch.
