Subnautica 2 forces rival survival game off its own launch date

Outbound, Steam's 13th most-wishlisted game, moved its PC and Xbox launch from May 14 to May 11 to avoid competing with Subnautica 2 on the same day.

Subnautica 2 hadn't even launched yet and it was already causing chaos for other developers on Steam. The underwater survival sequel claimed May 14 as its early access release date, and that single announcement was enough to send at least one other highly anticipated game scrambling to move out of the way.

The game in question is Outbound, a co-op open-world survival game from developer Square Glade Games where players build a life out of a camper van that expands into a full mobile base. It had over a million Steam wishlists and was sitting at number 13 on Steam's most-wishlisted chart. Not exactly a small indie nobody had heard of.

When the leviathan picks your release date

Here's the thing: Outbound had May 14 locked in as its launch date on Steam and Xbox. Then Subnautica 2 announced it was launching on those exact same platforms on that exact same day, with only two weeks' notice. Square Glade Games posted a Steam update explaining the situation with admirable honesty.

"The highly anticipated title Subnautica 2 just revealed their release date, which falls exactly on our planned release date May 14th," the developer wrote. "Even though we are very hyped for their game and big fans of the franchise, we think that it is best to not compete with such a highly anticipated title on that day."

The team's solution, framed perfectly in survival game terms: "We need to dodge the Leviathan, which means that you can start your road trip earlier."

Outbound's Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox launch moved forward to May 11. The PS5 and Nintendo Switch versions are still coming on May 14, since Subnautica 2 won't touch those platforms until its full 1.0 release. The demo, previously available to try, goes offline on May 8 as part of the transition.

The gravity of being Steam's top wishlist game

Subnautica 2 has held the top spot on Steam's most-wishlisted chart for months. That kind of position creates a gravitational pull that smaller developers have to actively navigate. Outbound's situation echoes what happened when Hollow Knight: Silksong finally announced a release window, which reportedly caused at least 8 indie games to adjust their own launch plans within days of that announcement.

The comparison isn't perfect. Silksong's situation involved years of anticipation and a fanbase that had been waiting so long the announcement itself became a cultural event. Subnautica 2's path to May 14 was messier, involving a public legal dispute between developer Unknown Worlds and publisher Krafton, a fired management team, and a court order to reinstate CEO Ted Gill. Despite all of that, the game arrived at a launch date, and that date immediately reshaped the calendar for games around it.

For context on the scale involved: Subnautica 2 at number 1 versus Outbound at number 13. Both games have enormous audiences waiting for them. But the gap between first and thirteenth on that chart is significant enough that Square Glade Games made the pragmatic call to simply get out of the way.

What this actually means for players waiting on both games

If you were already planning to play Outbound, the news is genuinely positive. PC and Xbox players get it three days earlier than expected. The PS5 and Switch versions land on May 14 as originally scheduled, which means console players on those platforms aren't affected at all.

For Subnautica 2 fans, none of this changes anything. The game still hits Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox on May 14 in early access. The early access launch covers PC and Xbox Series X/S, with a full 1.0 release on other platforms to come later.

The survival game genre is genuinely crowded right now, and two games with million-plus wishlists sharing a release date would have split attention in ways that hurt both. Square Glade Games made a smart call, dressed it up in the best possible in-universe language, and turned a potential problem into a minor piece of good news for their players.
