The Final Trailer Arrives
Debuted as part of a Nintendo Direct, the trailer was introduced by Illumination boss Chris Meledandri, who also took the opportunity to confirm two major new voice cast additions. Issa Rae joins as Honey Queen, while Donald Glover takes on the role of Yoshi, one of the three headline new characters confirmed for the film.
Meledandri teased that audiences can expect more surprises in the final movie, describing them as both "big" and “small.”
New Cast and Characters Confirmed
The three major new characters officially confirmed for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are:
- Yoshi, voiced by Donald Glover
- Honey Queen, voiced by Issa Rae
- Rosalina (voice actor not yet announced)
- Bowser Jr. (voice actor not yet announced)
This builds on earlier cast reveals and expands the world of the original The Super Mario Bros. Movie significantly. A previous Mario Galaxy Movie Direct in January had already confirmed appearances from several enemies drawn from Super Mario Bros. 2, most notably Birdo, along with the return of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, who appeared briefly in flashback sequences in the first film.
Illumination's Chris Meledandri promised additional surprises for the final movie beyond what has already been revealed, hinting that the full cast list may not yet be complete.

Behind the Camera
The creative team from the first film is largely intact for the sequel. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to direct, with Matthew Fogel back as screenwriter. Composer Brian Tyler also returns to score the film, ensuring a consistent audio-visual identity with its predecessor.
What to Expect on April 1
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set for a theatrical release on April 1. The sequel draws its premise from the beloved Super Mario Galaxy Nintendo Switch title, expanding the Mario cinematic universe into cosmic territory. With Yoshi, Rosalina, and Bowser Jr. all making their big-screen debuts in this installment, the film looks to push the franchise well beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.
The key here is that Nintendo and Illumination are clearly building toward a larger connected universe, with each new character addition pointing to bigger storytelling ambitions than the first film attempted.
