Nintendo described GameChat as a "limited-time" free offer when the Switch 2 launched last June. That limit is almost up.
The GameChat Welcome Offer expires on March 31, 2026, which means there's now just over a week left to try the feature at no extra cost. After that date, accessing GameChat requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The good news: it's the standard tier, not the pricier Expansion Pack.
What GameChat Actually Does
GameChat bundles voice chat, video chat, and screen sharing into a single feature accessible directly from the Switch 2. You can jump in by pressing the C Button on the Joy-Con 2 (R), the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, or the Nintendo GameCube controller. From there, you create or join a session and invite friends.
Here's the thing: Nintendo's own description of the setup flow is pretty straightforward.

According to Nintendo, once you complete the initial setup, you can create your own GameChat session and invite friends, or join one you've been invited to, all from the GameChat menu on the HOME screen.
It's a genuine quality-of-life addition for anyone playing online with friends, and the fact that it's been sitting behind a free trial since launch means a lot of Switch 2 owners may not have bothered to explore it yet.
The March 31 Deadline and What Changes
As Nintendo Life notes, the Welcome Offer period closing doesn't mean GameChat disappears. It just moves behind the Nintendo Switch Online paywall. If you're already subscribed, nothing changes for you practically speaking.
For players who haven't signed up for Switch Online yet, this is the last window to test GameChat without committing to a membership. Worth knowing before the month is out.

The value of GameChat has also drawn some skepticism. GameSpot's coverage raises the question of whether the feature justifies the subscription cost on its own, particularly for players who mainly use the console solo. That's a fair point. But for anyone who regularly plays online with friends, having voice, video, and screen share in one place is genuinely useful.
Nine Months In, Still Worth a Look
The Switch 2 has been out since June 2025, which means the Welcome Offer has had a longer run than many players probably expected. If you've owned the console this whole time and never launched GameChat, the next week is your last chance to see what it's about before the subscription requirement kicks in. After March 31, the feature stays available, just not for free. Make sure to check out more:
