The numbers are in, and Nintendo is having a very good quarter. As of March 31, 2026, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 19.86 million units worldwide, while the original Nintendo Switch has crossed 155.92 million units, according to Nintendo's latest earnings release. Party game fans will recognize that Super Mario Party Jamboree: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV is part of a broader software wave helping push those totals higher.

How the Switch 2 got to nearly 20 million in under a year

The Switch 2 launched and moved fast. During just the three-month window ending March 31, 2026, 2.49 million Switch 2 units sold alongside 10.78 million software units. That single quarter alone represents meaningful momentum for a console still in its first year on shelves.

The original Switch, by comparison, added 0.55 million hardware units and 27.98 million software units in the same period. The legacy platform is clearly winding down on hardware, but its software ecosystem is still generating enormous volume. Over 1,528.14 million Switch games have sold worldwide in total. That number is almost difficult to process.

Mario Kart World is doing numbers that defy expectations

Here's the thing: Mario Kart World sitting at 14.70 million copies sold on a platform with under 20 million units installed is a remarkable attach rate. That means a significant portion of every Switch 2 owner on the planet has that game. Donkey Kong Bananza follows at 4.52 million, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A (Nintendo Switch 2 Edition) has reached 3.94 million.

Pokemon Pokopia debuted at 2.41 million as of March 31, but Nintendo noted the actual global sell-through has already surpassed four million units as of five weeks post-launch. Kirby Air Riders rounds out the top five at 1.87 million.

On the Switch side, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues its historic run at 71.08 million, making it one of the best-selling games ever made. Animal Crossing: New Horizons sits at 49.91 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has reached 37.76 million.

The broader software story Nintendo quietly dropped

Beyond the top-ten lists, Nintendo released additional first-party figures that deserve attention. Super Mario Bros. Wonder has now sold 17.44 million copies. Nintendo Switch Sports is at 18.32 million. Super Mario Party Jamboree (the original Switch version) crossed 9.96 million, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A on Switch has hit 8.85 million.

First-party sales at a glance

First-party sales at a glance

The combined Switch 2 software total now sits at more than 48.71 million games sold worldwide. Given that the hardware base is still under 20 million units, that per-console software attach rate points to a player base that is actively buying games, not just the hardware.

What these figures say about where Nintendo stands

The original Switch is now comfortably in the conversation for the best-selling home console of all time, with 155.92 million units placing it well past the PlayStation 4's lifetime total. The Switch 2 is tracking ahead of where the original Switch was at a comparable point in its lifecycle, which is exactly the trajectory Nintendo needed to justify the upgrade cycle.

What most players miss in these earnings reports is the software-to-hardware ratio. When a platform's games are outselling its hardware by multiples that large, it signals that the installed base is engaged, not just collecting dust. Nintendo's first-party lineup is clearly doing its job.
