Windrose Hits 1.5 Million Steam Wishlists, Demo Stays Up Until Launch

Windrose Gameplay: Pirate Open World ...

Picture this: a scrappy indie pirate game rolls into Steam Next Fest, tops the most-played demos list, and then just... keeps going. That's exactly where Windrose sits right now.

Developer Windrose Crew announced via a Steam update that the game has surpassed 1.5 million wishlists, building on the momentum from its Steam Next Fest run where it had already cleared 1 million. The number that really stands out, though, is 800,000 players who have actually downloaded and played the demo. That's not passive interest. That's people actively choosing to spend time with the game.

And here's the thing: the demo isn't going anywhere. Windrose Crew confirmed the demo will remain playable right up until the Early Access launch, a direct response to player demand.

"You are amazing! Seriously, after climbing to the top demos of Steam Next Fest and reaching one million wishlists we were not expecting this momentum to continue, but here we are, with over 1,500,000 sea wolves waiting for Windrose to finally set sail," the developer wrote in the Steam update. "Over 800,000 captains have tried the demo! And by the way, you can still do it, the demo is staying up until the Early Access launch."

What the demo actually gives you

Windrose is the kind of game that sounds like it's trying to do too much on paper. Open-world survival mechanics, ship sailing and customization, naval combat, dungeon raiding, and a story rooted in real-world historical inspiration. The demo covers the first three islands, a handful of early quests, and yes, full ship-to-ship pirate battles.

Any progress made in the demo will not carry over to the full Early Access release, so treat it as a standalone taster rather than a head start.

The comparison points that keep coming up are Assassin's Creed Black Flag for the sailing feel, Sea of Thieves for the swashbuckling combat, and Ark: Survival Evolved for the crafting and base-building depth. That's a loaded combination, and the fact that it holds together as well as it does in a pre-release demo says a lot about where the full game is headed.

Changes coming based on player feedback

The player response hasn't just been a wishlist counter climbing. Windrose Crew is actively using demo feedback to shape what ships with Early Access. The current list of planned changes includes:

  • Improved one-ship co-op, letting multiple players man cannons on a single vessel simultaneously
  • More loot variety across encounters
  • A possible expansion to eight-player co-op (though the devs are recommending 1-4 players as the sweet spot)
  • Sea shanties that are, in the developer's own words, "more pirate-y"

The team is being transparent that everything on that list is still subject to change, which is exactly the right posture for a game this early in its public life.

"Thank you all once again for your passion and input. We can't imagine a better community for Windrose, and will keep working hard to deliver," the developer added.

No release date, but the devs are cooking

The key question everyone has, of course, is when Early Access actually launches. Windrose Crew isn't withholding a date to build hype. The team simply wants to be "confident enough" before committing to a window, with the stated goal of shipping on time and in good condition.

That's a refreshingly honest position. The developer blog outlining the 2026 quality-of-life roadmap gives a clearer picture of how the team is thinking about the launch window, with a focus on spec improvements and systems polish before pulling the trigger on a date.

For now, 1.5 million people are waiting. The demo is still there if you haven't tried it yet, and the devs are clearly listening. The Early Access launch, whenever it arrives, is going to have a lot of eyes on it. Make sure to check out more:
