Palia launched its Royal Highlands expansion on May 12, 2026, and it is the biggest update developer Singularity 6 has shipped since the game entered beta. A brand-new zone, the game's first-ever mount system, multi-channel clothing dyes, elemental hunting mechanics, and two new housing sets all arrived at once. This guide breaks down every major feature, tells you what to prioritize on day one, and explains what you can skip until later.

Royal Highlands zone overview
How do you access the Royal Highlands?
Access is more open than most MMO expansions. You only need to have unlocked gliders in the base game to enter the zone through Elderwood. You do not need to finish the Elderwood story to walk in and start harvesting. The zone was designed with midgame and casual players in mind, and developer Singularity 6 described it as "a little more playable" than Elderwood for players who have not yet hit the endgame.
That said, completing the Elderwood main quest is required before the Royal Highlands main quest becomes available. So if story progression matters to you, finish Elderwood first. If you just want to farm, ride horses, and explore, head straight in.
Harvestables in the Royal Highlands are tuned to be on par with Palium, meaning standard fine tools are sufficient. You do not need top-tier exquisite tools to gather efficiently here.
What is the new map like?
The Royal Highlands zone is large enough that Singularity 6 had to resize the default map UI to accommodate it. The visual tone shifts away from the darker atmosphere of Elderwood toward wide open rocky plateaus, windswept hills, and black sand beaches. The vibe, as described in the Massively Overpowered preview, is reminiscent of Rohan from Lord of the Rings. Ancient human ruins are scattered throughout, which ties directly into the lore reason horses exist here at all.
Campsites appear across the zone and are fully functional, unlike the decorative ones seen in earlier areas. You can stop at a campsite with friends and cook food together. There is a cooldown timer on food so your meal is protected before others can grab it. No fall damage applies when jumping off cliffs on horseback, which opens up some genuinely fun traversal options.

How do you get your first horse in Palia?
Horses in Palia are called Dawnspur, and they are tied to ancient human culture lore. Getting your first one does not require story completion. You enter the Royal Highlands and complete an easy introductory quest, described by Singularity 6 as a low barrier specifically so all players can access mounts quickly.
Once you have a horse, you can ride it across the open world and on your housing plot. Riding inside Kilima Village proper is not permitted, per the Massively Overpowered preview. There are three horse types total. The standard horse is free. The two specialty horse variants require you to unlock riding ability through supporter packs, which Singularity 6 launched previously and are described as offering strong value for currency alone.
Breeding is also available. Players with level 2 ranching can breed horses on their ranch to pursue unique variants. TheGamer's preview specifically mentions the possibility of breeding legendary iridescent variants, though the exact outcome of breeding depends on your ranch progression.
Riding is available on the open world map and housing plots, but not inside Kilima Village or NPC houses. Plan your routes accordingly.
What are Amber Echoes and how does elemental hunting work?
The Royal Highlands introduces a new specialty resource called Amber Echoes. Once you unlock the relevant quest, Amber Echoes drop from literally everything in the zone. This is the primary zone-specific currency and crafting material, so prioritizing that unlock quest early will pay off throughout your time in the area.
Elemental critters are a new hunting mechanic. Creatures like the sernuk can become infused with elements such as water, which gives them a water shield. The water-infused sernuk is best engaged from the front and taken down quickly, because breaking through the shield becomes significantly harder if the creature starts running. Defeating an elemental critter gives you a chance at a special drop that can be turned in at nearby elemental vaults for extra loot. Singularity 6 described this system as designed to "reward tactical, intelligent play."

What new housing and crafting content is included?
Two new housing sets arrive with the expansion. The ancient human set matches the crumbling stone ruins found across the original map and is unlocked through the Lunar Path system. The aristocrats set carries a baroque aesthetic and is obtained using the new map resource from the Royal Highlands zone itself. Both sets are distinct enough that players who favor either decorating style have a clear target to work toward.
The full range of new harvestables covers ore, wood, flowers, bugs, and 20 new fish species, all balanced at the Palium tier. Plot storage receives an upgrade with a new Jadium storage type adding approximately 4,000 new spaces.
Clothing dye is the other major crafting addition. For the first time, players can apply three-channel dye palettes to their outfits rather than single colors. Singularity 6's James Horgan quipped during the preview, "There is no combat in Palia, but there is dyeing." Dye palettes must be unlocked through in-game content rather than purchased directly.
Furniture tinting was already in the game before this expansion. The new three-channel dye system applies specifically to clothing and outfits, so the two systems are separate.
Who is Echelon?
A new befriendable NPC named Echelon arrives with the Royal Highlands. Based on the cutscene shown during the Massively Overpowered preview, he appears to be a Majiri and demonstrates an ability to calm animals, which is relevant given the mount-heavy nature of the zone. He is described as a romanceable character in a game that already has an established romance system.
What else should you know before jumping in?
The 10 million player milestone event ran from April 21 through May 12, giving away two free mystery outfits from the cash shop. That event has now closed, but it marked the first time Singularity 6 gave away cash shop items directly, which is worth noting as a sign of how the studio approaches its playerbase.
Palia remains in beta with no stated launch date. The developers told Massively Overpowered they are "committed to content for years" and joked that at patch 0.202, they have 798 patches to go before hitting 1.0. PC controller support is in progress, which should also improve the Steam Deck experience even without a dedicated compatibility pass.
Player-to-player trading and a full combat system are both off the table for now. Horse racing is also not planned yet, though Singularity 6 confirmed they are watching community feedback on the mount system closely to determine what comes next.
Palia sits comfortably among the best simulation games available for free, and the Royal Highlands expansion adds enough new systems that both returning players and newcomers have plenty of reasons to log in.
