How To Catch And Breed Astegon In Palworld

Alpha Astegon is one of Palworld's most frustrating late-game bosses to locate, and not because the fight itself is hard to find on the map. The map icon is right there on Mount Obsidian. The problem is that the boss simply isn't where the icon suggests. After testing this route multiple times, the confusion becomes obvious: players arrive at an open volcanic plateau expecting a giant dragon and find nothing but lava and rock. That's because Alpha Astegon lives underground, inside a hidden cave called the Destroyed Mineshaft.

Where exactly is Alpha Astegon hiding?

The short answer: below the surface of Mount Obsidian, tucked behind a cliff wall near the lava pools. The map icon marks the general underground arena, not a surface spawn point. Once you understand that distinction, the search becomes much more manageable.

Alpha Astegon is a Level 48 Dark/Dragon type boss, making it one of the highest-level Alpha encounters in the game. The enclosed arena inside the Destroyed Mineshaft means you cannot kite the boss around the room, so preparation matters more here than in most other Alpha fights.

How to reach the Destroyed Mineshaft

Follow these steps in order and you will reach the boss arena without backtracking.

  1. Fast travel to the Mount Obsidian Midpoint statue. This is the closest travel point to the boss arena and puts you a short distance from the entrance.
  2. Face the large cliff wall along the volcanic ridge. From the fast travel point, orient yourself toward the rockface that runs along the ridge line.
  3. Mount a flying Pal and glide directly toward the cliff wall. The entrance to the Destroyed Mineshaft is not visible from a distance, but flying straight at the wall reveals the cave opening.
  4. Fly straight into the tunnel. Once the entrance appears, continue forward into the cave without hesitating.
  5. Enter the enclosed circular room at the end of the tunnel. Stepping inside triggers the Level 48 Alpha Astegon encounter.

For players who prefer coordinates, the entrance sits roughly around -576, -421, though some players report slight variations closer to -578, -418 or -435, -533. The torch visual is more reliable than any single coordinate set.

How do you capture Alpha Astegon?

Weaken Astegon in combat until its HP is low, then throw a high-tier Pal Sphere during a stagger window or when it pauses between attacks. The enclosed space actually helps here since the boss has less room to move away from thrown spheres. High-tier spheres are non-negotiable at Level 48.

What can you do with Astegon after capturing it?

Once you have Astegon in your party, craft the Astegon Saddle, which unlocks at Level 47. This turns Astegon into a flying mount with a passive bonus: while riding it, your damage to ore nodes increases significantly, making it one of the best late-game mining Pals available.

Is there an alternative to fighting the Alpha?

Yes. If the Level 48 fight feels too punishing at your current progression, Astegon can be bred from a Huge Dragon Egg using specific combinations. Relaxaurus and Suzaku or Elizabee and Blazamut both produce Astegon offspring through breeding. This route skips the Alpha dungeon entirely and gives you the same Pal without the combat requirement.

Palworld sits firmly in the adventure games space where exploration and preparation define how smoothly these fights go, and the Astegon hunt is a perfect example of why knowing the terrain matters as much as knowing the enemy.
