Phasmophobia has been in Early Access since 2020, and for most of that time your ghost hunter looked exactly like everyone else's. That changes on May 5, 2026. Kinetic Games is shipping the Player Character Update across all platforms, bringing 12 selectable characters, a full cosmetics shop, reworked animations, and the removal of the death room. No microtransactions. No battle pass. Just a free update that finally lets you look the part before the ghost inevitably ends your run.
What's actually in the Player Character Update?
The headline feature is the new Customisation Shop, accessible directly from the lobby. According to Kinetic Games' official announcement, players can choose from one of 12 characters and then adjust hairstyles, hair colour, innerwear, outerwear, accessories, and more. The shop launches with a solid selection of items, and Kinetic has confirmed additional cosmetics will arrive through future updates and Twitch Drops.
The first Twitch Drop tied to the update is a High Priestess T-shirt, available from May 5 through May 11. Any Phasmophobia creator on Twitch can distribute it, so you just need to watch a stream with your Twitch account linked to the game.

Customization shop at launch
All cosmetics are unlockable through gameplay challenges or purchasable with in-game currency. Kinetic Games has confirmed there are no real-money microtransactions attached to any items.
Players who completed missions during the 2026 Cursed Hollow event will receive three exclusive items at launch: a necklace, a t-shirt, and a Forest Spirit Mask. If you finished those limited-time missions, they show up automatically when the update drops.
What are the new animations?
Beyond cosmetics, the update reworks how your character actually moves. New animations cover death sequences, revival, and the EMF reader, making interactions feel more grounded and realistic. These were teased earlier in Phasmophobia's 2026 roadmap and represent part of Kinetic's broader push toward the 1.0 release planned for later this year.
The death room is also being removed entirely. As detailed in coverage by vpesports, this is a complete overhaul of the mechanic's logic rather than a simple reduction. How you interact with the environment and your equipment during an investigation is also changing alongside it.
Art Director Corey Dixon explained the reasoning in a statement to press: "Since Phasmophobia launched in 2020, the team has put in so much effort to make the game more immersive and replayable, and giving players the freedom to personalise their ghost hunters feels like the natural next step. Player customisation unlocks so many possibilities for us in the future, and paired with the updated models and animations we're also starting to up the scare factor even more."
Connect your Twitch account to Phasmophobia before May 11 to claim the High Priestess T-shirt drop. Any stream from a Phasmophobia creator counts toward earning it.
What platforms is the update coming to?
The Player Character Update is a free update hitting every platform simultaneously on May 5, 2026.
Phasmophobia is currently priced at $19.99 on all platforms. The Player Character Update costs nothing on top of that.
How does the cosmetics system work?
The shop runs entirely on in-game currency, meaning you earn it by playing rather than spending real money. Cosmetics can also be unlocked directly through gameplay challenges, so there are two paths to getting what you want. Kinetic has not detailed exact pricing in in-game currency for individual items yet; the full breakdown will be available when the update goes live.
Future items will be added through regular updates and Twitch Drops, so the shop is designed to grow over time rather than launch complete.
The 2026 roadmap, revealed in January, listed the Player Character Update as the first major content drop of the year. An Alan Wake 2 collaboration and the game's eventual 1.0 release are also on the schedule.
Is this part of the road to 1.0?
Yes, explicitly. Kinetic Games has been transparent that every major update this year feeds into the full 1.0 launch. The Player Character Update covers two things that matter for that goal: making the game feel more polished visually, and giving players a reason to stay invested between investigations. A Blumhouse movie adaptation is also in development, which suggests the studio is treating Phasmophobia as a long-term property rather than something winding down.
The death room removal and equipment interaction changes are arguably the most significant gameplay shifts here, even if the cosmetics are the flashier announcement. Changes to how you die and how you handle your gear during a hunt will affect how every investigation plays out.
The full patch notes won't be available until the update goes live on May 5. Specific details on gameplay changes beyond what Kinetic has previewed may surface then, so check the official channels for the complete list.
