Mega Evolutions are the single biggest swing you get in any Pokémon Champions match. You only get one per game, regardless of how many Mega Stones your team is carrying, so picking the right mon and triggering it at the right moment can flip a losing game entirely. With Pokémon Champions launching on April 8, 2026, the roster of available Megas has expanded significantly, pulling in new forms first seen in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and giving them official, confirmed abilities for the first time.
This guide covers every confirmed Mega Evolution currently available in Pokémon Champions, the abilities they carry, how to get the Mega Stones you need, and which new abilities are worth building around.
What are the brand-new abilities in Pokémon Champions?
Four abilities are making their debut in Pokémon Champions, as genuinely new mechanics rather than returning effects:
- Mega Sol (Mega Meganium): Treats all weather-dependent moves as if harsh sunlight is active, even when no weather is set. This is a passive sun team that never needs Drought support.
- Dragonize (Mega Feraligatr): Converts every Normal-type move into a Dragon-type move and adds a 20% power boost on top. Feraligatr's Water/Dragon typing pairs with this in interesting ways.
- Piercing Drill (Mega Excadrill): Contact moves punch through protection moves like Protect and Detect, dealing 25% of the damage they would normally deal. According to TheGamer, this was introduced specifically in Pokémon Champions.
- Spicy Spray (Mega Scovillain): Guarantees a burn on any opponent that hits Scovillain with a damaging move. Passive chip damage with no setup required.

These 23 Mega Evolutions were first introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and are now playable in Pokémon Champions at launch, with their abilities confirmed for the first time.
warning
Mega Golurk (Unseen Fist) and Mega Excadrill (Piercing Drill) both interact with Protect, but in different ways. Unseen Fist completely bypasses protection, while Piercing Drill only deals 25% of the damage. Do not assume they work identically.

The older Mega forms from the main series games are also present. These abilities are unchanged from their original appearances.
How do you Mega Evolve in Pokémon Champions?
Mega Evolution requires a Mega Stone specific to the Pokémon you want to evolve. Once a Mega Stone is held by the applicable Pokémon, press R during battle to trigger the transformation. According to Destructoid, you can only activate Mega Evolution once per match, even if multiple Pokémon on your team are holding Mega Stones.
There are three ways to get Mega Stones, as confirmed by Destructoid:
- Store purchase using VP (the in-game currency)
- Monthly pass premium tier rewards
- Free objectives and tutorials for select stones
danger
The one-per-match rule applies to the entire team, not per Pokémon. If you Mega Evolve your lead and it gets knocked out, you cannot Mega Evolve another Pokémon for the rest of that match. Choose your moment carefully.

Which new Mega Evolutions are worth using competitively?
After looking at the ability list, a few stand out as genuinely strong picks for team building:
Mega Greninja with Protean is the most flexible attacker in the new roster. Changing type to match each move means it always gets STAB, and Water/Dark gives it solid neutral coverage to start.
Mega Dragonite with Multiscale is a reliable setup sweeper. Taking half damage at full HP gives it a free turn to set up, and Dragon/Flying is a strong offensive typing.
Mega Glimmora with Adaptability turns its Rock/Poison STAB moves into 2x multipliers instead of the standard 1.5x. That is a significant damage increase that rewards mono-type move sets.
Mega Skarmory with Stalwart is a direct counter to Follow Me and Rage Powder redirect strategies, which are staples of doubles formats. Steel/Flying typing already makes it hard to hit.
