Pokémon Champions launches in two weeks ...

Incineroar has been a fixture in VGC for years, and its transition into Pokémon Champions has done nothing to change that reputation. The Fire/Dark-type starter from Alola brings a combination of tools that no other single slot replicates: Intimidate on entry to immediately soften physical attackers, Fake Out for guaranteed turn-one disruption, and Parting Shot to stack debuffs while repositioning. Incineroar fits into virtually every team archetype, from Balance and Stall to Trick Room and Sun. That kind of flexibility is rare, and it's why this Pokemon keeps showing up at the top of doubles tier lists.

That said, it did lose some tools in Champions. Incineroar no longer has access to Knock Off or U-Turn in this format, which narrows its options compared to prior VGC seasons. The strategy adapts around what it still has, and what it still has is excellent.

What is the best doubles build for Incineroar?

Doubles is where Incineroar genuinely excels, and the standard bulky support build is the one you should start with.

Bulky support build (doubles)

Nature: Careful (+Sp. Def, -Sp. Atk) Ability: Intimidate Held Item: Sitrus Berry

Moves:

  • Fake Out (priority disruption, forces flinch on turn one)
  • Flare Blitz (120 base power STAB, 10% burn chance, 1/3 recoil)
  • Parting Shot (lowers opponent's Attack and Sp. Atk by one stage, then switches out)
  • Snarl (lowers opposing Sp. Atk by one stage, hits both opponents in doubles)

Stat point spread (from Game8):

  • HP: 30
  • Attack: 1
  • Defense: 13
  • Sp. Def: 20
  • Speed: 2

This spread targets final stats of 200 HP / 136 Atk / 123 Def / 90 SpA / 143 SpD / 82 Spe. The heavy investment in HP and Sp. Def lets Incineroar absorb special hits from threats like Primarina, which bypasses Intimidate entirely by using special attacks. Sitrus Berry gives a burst of recovery at half HP, which is more reliable than Leftovers in the fast-paced doubles format.

The play pattern is straightforward: switch in to trigger Intimidate, use Fake Out to flinch one opponent, then either deal damage with Flare Blitz or escape with Parting Shot to stack a second Intimidate drop on the opposing team. Snarl covers the special attackers that Intimidate doesn't touch.

Offensive utility build (doubles)

If the standard build feels too passive, The Game Haus documents an alternative that trades Snarl for Knock Off, shifting toward item disruption and slightly more offensive pressure.

Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -Sp. Atk) Ability: Intimidate Held Item: Assault Vest or Sitrus Berry

Moves:

  • Fake Out
  • Flare Blitz
  • Knock Off
  • Protect

Stat point spread:

  • HP: 14
  • Attack: 20
  • Defense: 16
  • Sp. Def: 16

Adamant with 20 Attack investment makes Fake Out noticeably stronger, and Knock Off removes held items from opposing Pokemon, disrupting Berry users and Assault Vest holders. Protect buys a free turn to scout or let a partner act safely. This version is less consistent on the utility side but catches opponents off guard, especially given the prevalence of Steel and Grass-types in the early Champions metagame according to Game8.

What is the best singles build for Incineroar?

In singles, Incineroar is functional but faces stiffer competition for team slots. Deltia's Gaming notes that other options outperform it in the singles format, so treat this as a situational pick rather than a must-run.

Nature: Impish (+Def, -Sp. Atk) Ability: Intimidate Held Item: Leftovers or Sitrus Berry

Moves:

  • Flare Blitz
  • Parting Shot
  • Darkest Lariat
  • Will-O-Wisp

Darkest Lariat replaces Fake Out here since the flinch mechanic loses value in singles without a partner to benefit from the free turn. Will-O-Wisp spreads burns to cut physical attackers' damage output in half, stacking with Intimidate for significant physical damage reduction. Parting Shot still works as a pivoting tool, and Flare Blitz provides the primary offensive threat. The Impish nature boosts physical bulk without touching the Attack stat.

Sitrus Berry is the go-to for doubles because Incineroar frequently drops to the activation threshold in fast, high-damage exchanges. Leftovers suits singles where games last longer and incremental recovery adds up. Assault Vest is listed as an option for the offensive doubles build by The Game Haus, though it locks Incineroar out of Parting Shot and Will-O-Wisp.

Best teammates to pair with Incineroar

Incineroar supports physical attackers most effectively since Intimidate reduces incoming physical damage for the whole team. Ghost-types also pair naturally with it, absorbing the Fighting-type moves that threaten Incineroar directly.

Doubles team synergies (from Game8 and The Game Haus):

  • Dragonite benefits from Intimidate and Fake Out support to set up safely
  • Garchomp appreciates the reduced incoming physical damage and board control, though it's also listed as a counter when opposing Incineroar
  • Mega Charizard Y works as a Sun team partner
  • Sinistcha provides Rage Powder support and handles incoming Fighting moves aimed at Incineroar
  • Kingambit and Milotic both deter opposing Incineroar through their Defiant and Competitive abilities respectively
  • Feraligatr pairs well as a physical attacker that benefits from Intimidate support

Singles team example (from Deltia's Gaming): Incineroar, Meganium, Palafin, Gengar, Corviknight, Hatterene. Palafin slots in as an easy switch target from Parting Shot, and Mega Meganium is noted as one of the stronger Mega Evolutions in the current format.

What counters Incineroar in Pokémon Champions?

Knowing the counters helps you either play around them or decide whether Incineroar fits your specific team.

Ability-based counters:

  • Milotic (Competitive): gains +2 Sp. Atk when Intimidate drops its Attack, turning Incineroar's entry into a buff for the opponent
  • Kingambit (Defiant): gains +2 Attack when Intimidate activates, making it immediately more dangerous
  • Dragapult (Clear Body): completely ignores Intimidate, and its Ghost typing makes it immune to Fake Out

Offensive counters:

  • Urshifu (Rapid-Strike): strong Water-type damage that bypasses defensive play and hits Incineroar's 2x Water weakness
  • Garchomp: Ground typing threatens Incineroar directly
  • Primarina: special Water attacker that Intimidate does nothing against
  • Sneasler: has a faster Fake Out than Incineroar, plus Close Combat that puts Incineroar into 2HKO range according to Game8

Item-based counters:

  • Pokemon holding a White Herb can negate the Attack drop from Intimidate on the turn they use it
  • Clear Body holders like Dragapult ignore stat drops entirely

Building your Incineroar correctly

The core decision comes down to which format you're playing. For doubles ranked, start with the Careful bulky support build. It's the most consistent version and the one that aligns with Incineroar's actual role: a tempo-controlling pivot that weakens physical attackers, disrupts opponents with Fake Out, and repositions through Parting Shot to stack Intimidate drops. The offensive Adamant build is a real option if your team already handles special threats, but the Careful spread is more forgiving.

For singles, the Impish build with Will-O-Wisp adds a burn layer on top of Intimidate, which can genuinely cripple physical attackers. Just go in knowing that Incineroar faces more competition for team slots in singles than it does in doubles.
