Vulpix is one of the most sought-after Fire-types in Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green, and for good reason. It evolves into Ninetales, a fan-favorite powerhouse, and fills a critical role on any team that didn't start with Charmander. The catch? Finding one takes patience, and if you picked up Fire Red instead of Leaf Green, things get a little more complicated.
Can You Catch Vulpix in Pokémon Fire Red?
Short answer: no. Vulpix is a version-exclusive Pokémon available only in Leaf Green. If you're playing Fire Red, the same spawn locations will produce Growlithe encounters instead. Both Pokémon fill a similar role as rare Fire-types worth hunting, but they are not interchangeable between versions.
The only way to get Vulpix in Fire Red is through a trade with another player using a local wireless connection. If you have a friend with Leaf Green, coordinate a trade to add Vulpix to your Pokédex.
important
Fire Red players cannot catch Vulpix in the wild under any circumstances. Trading is the only legitimate method to obtain one.
Where to Find Vulpix in Pokémon Leaf Green
Vulpix appears in three distinct locations across Leaf Green. Each spot has a different encounter rate, so knowing which to prioritize saves you a lot of time grinding through Meowth and Pidgey.
Route 7
Route 7 connects Celadon City to Lavender Town and is one of the earliest places you can start your Vulpix hunt. The spawn rate here is low, so be ready for a grind. You will run into plenty of Meowth, Pidgey, and Bellsprout before a Vulpix appears.
Route 8
Route 8 sits between Lavender Town and Saffron City and offers the best encounter odds of the three locations. If you want to minimize time spent in tall grass, start here. It is still listed as uncommon rather than common, so patience is still required.
Pokémon Mansion
The Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island is the third option. Vulpix spawns are rare inside the mansion, and the area is filled with other Pokémon competing for encounters. This location is worth visiting if you are already exploring Cinnabar Island for other reasons, but Route 8 remains the more efficient hunting ground.
tip
Stock up on Poké Balls before heading to any of these locations. Vulpix can be skittish and a failed catch means starting the encounter grind all over again.
Why Is Vulpix Worth the Grind?
Fire-type Pokémon are genuinely scarce in Fire Red and Leaf Green. Outside of the starter Charmander, your Fire-type options in Leaf Green are:
- Vulpix (and its evolution, Ninetales)
- Ponyta
- Magmar
- Flareon (requires an Eevee and a Fire Stone)
- Moltres (legendary, one per save file)
That limited pool makes Vulpix a genuinely valuable catch, especially if you want a reliable Fire-type that can carry you through the mid and late game without using your legendary slot.
tip
Ninetales has solid Special Attack and Special Defense stats, making it a capable special attacker for the Elite Four and beyond.
How to Evolve Vulpix into Ninetales
Vulpix does not evolve through leveling up. Instead, it requires a Fire Stone to trigger the evolution into Ninetales. This is the same mechanic used for evolving Eevee into Flareon and Growlithe into Arcanine.
Where to Get a Fire Stone
There are two reliable ways to obtain a Fire Stone:
- Celadon Department Store - Fire Stones can be purchased here, and the supply is unlimited. This is the most consistent source if you want multiple stones to complete your Pokédex.
- Mt. Ember - Fire Stones can be found as items on the ground during exploration. This source is finite, so do not rely on it as your only supply.
warning
Using a Fire Stone on Vulpix is permanent and cannot be undone. Make sure Vulpix has learned any moves you want from leveling up before triggering the evolution, since Ninetales cannot learn those moves naturally afterward.
What Moves Should Vulpix Know Before Evolving?
Before using that Fire Stone, check Vulpix's move list. Ninetales learns very few moves by level-up after evolution, so it is worth holding off until Vulpix has a solid moveset. Key moves to consider grabbing before evolving:
- Flamethrower (learned by level-up as Vulpix)
- Will-O-Wisp (useful for status conditions)
- Confuse Ray (disruption tool)
Once you are happy with the moveset, use the Fire Stone and enjoy your new Ninetales.

Hunting Vulpix in Leaf Green takes persistence, but the payoff of adding Ninetales to your roster makes every failed encounter worth it. Head to Route 8 for your best odds, grab a stack of Poké Balls, and keep at it until that orange fox finally appears.
