Facts About FireRed And LeafGreen ...

If you've been grinding through Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green and wondering why leveling up your weaker party members feels like such a slog, the EXP Share is exactly what you need. Unlike modern Pokémon titles that hand out experience to your whole party automatically, these classic games require a bit more effort. Here's everything you need to know to claim it and put it to work.

What Is the EXP Share in Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green?

The EXP Share is a held item that allows one of your Pokémon to receive a portion of the experience earned in battle, even if that Pokémon never actually fought. You give it to the Pokémon you want to train, and it passively absorbs EXP whenever your active battler wins a fight.

This is a crucial distinction from what players expect in newer titles. In modern Pokémon games, an EXP All mechanic shares experience across your entire party at once. Fire Red and Leaf Green do not have that system. The EXP Share only benefits the single Pokémon holding the item, so you'll need to manage your party manually if you want to level up multiple members efficiently.

Where Do You Get the EXP Share?

The EXP Share becomes available once you reach Fuchsia City, which is where you earn the fifth Gym Badge on your journey to becoming Pokémon Champion. You won't be able to grab it before this point, so don't waste time searching earlier in the game.

To pick it up, head to the Route 15 gatehouse, located on the eastern side of Fuchsia City. Inside the gatehouse, find the staircase at the bottom end of the building and head upstairs. You'll find Professor Oak's Aide waiting there, and speaking to this NPC is how you claim the item.

What Do You Need to Qualify for the EXP Share?

Professor Oak's Aide won't hand over the EXP Share for free. You need to have caught at least 50 different species of Pokémon before the Aide will reward you with the item.

The good news is that by the time you reach Fuchsia City, most players are already at or beyond this number through natural gameplay. If you find yourself a few species short, spend some time in the various routes and caves you've passed through. There are plenty of Pokémon to catch across Kanto that will push you over the threshold quickly.

How to Use the EXP Share Effectively

Once you have the EXP Share, the strategy is straightforward. Give the item to whichever Pokémon in your party needs the most training, then battle normally with your stronger Pokémon leading the fight. The holder gains experience from every battle without needing to be sent out.

Here are some practical tips for getting the most out of it:

  • Rotate the item between party members as each one levels up to your target level.
  • Use it on newly caught Pokémon that are significantly underleveled compared to the rest of your team.
  • Combine it with the VS Seeker to rematch trainers on routes and farm experience efficiently.
  • Keep in mind that only one Pokémon benefits at a time, so prioritize whoever is furthest behind.

How Does This Compare to Modern Pokémon Games?

The difference in EXP mechanics between the classic and modern Pokémon games is significant. In titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, experience sharing is automatic and affects your whole party. In Fire Red and Leaf Green, you're working with a single-target held item that requires deliberate management.

This makes the classic approach more hands-on and arguably more rewarding for players who enjoy tactical party building. You have to think about which Pokémon needs the item most at any given time, rather than passively leveling everything at once.

Step-by-Step: Getting the EXP Share Fast

Here's the quickest path to claiming your EXP Share once you hit the mid-game:

  1. Progress through the story until you reach Fuchsia City and earn the fifth badge.
  2. Confirm your Pokédex has at least 50 species registered as caught.
  3. Exit Fuchsia City to the east onto Route 15.
  4. Enter the Route 15 gatehouse building.
  5. Find the staircase at the bottom end of the gatehouse and go upstairs.
  6. Speak to Professor Oak's Aide to receive the EXP Share.
  7. Open your bag, navigate to the items, and give the EXP Share to the Pokémon you want to train.

That's all it takes. From here, keep battling and watch your underleveled party member catch up without any extra effort on your part.
