Retro Rewind - Video Store Simulator

Running a video store just got more rewarding

Retro Rewind - Video Store Simulator puts you behind the counter of a VHS rental shop, stocking shelves, serving customers, and slowly building a movie empire from scratch. The game has 18 Steam achievements to unlock, and here's the part most players miss: every single one pays out $100 and 50 XP in-game when you complete it. That makes achievement hunting a genuinely useful strategy, not just a checklist for completionists. This guide covers every achievement, what triggers it, and how to get there efficiently.

What are all the achievements in Retro Rewind?

There are exactly 18 achievements in Retro Rewind - Video Store Simulator. They split naturally into four categories: early-game milestones you'll hit without thinking, inventory goals that require sustained effort, snack machine objectives tied to specific unlocks, and late-game store-building targets that take real time to reach.

Every achievement rewards $100 and 50 XP on completion, so prioritizing them actively accelerates your progression. The rarest achievement, The Movie Empire (owning 1000 movies), is held by only 16.31% of tracked players. The most common, First Day Complete, sits at 100% since you can't avoid it.

Early-game achievements: what you'll unlock automatically

Four achievements come naturally during your first few sessions. First Day Complete triggers the moment you finish day one as a store owner. RIP just requires you to throw any movie in the trash, which happens organically when you're managing inventory. Good Customer Service asks you to help 20 customers with movie requests, something you'll clear in normal play within the first couple of days. First Hire unlocks when you bring on your first employee.

None of these need special strategies. Play the game and they arrive on their own.

How do you unlock the snack machine achievements?

Three achievements are tied to selling snacks: Brain Freeze! (20 slushy drinks), Popping Off! (20 popcorn), and Sugar Rush! (20 cotton candies). Each requires a specific machine, and each machine has its own unlock condition.

For the slush machine, customers will approach the counter and request a specific flavor. You need to add the correct syrup to fill their order. If a customer asks for a rainbow slushy, use every slushy syrup flavor in the drink. Getting this wrong wastes inventory, so pay attention to what each customer asks for before you pour.

How do you build your movie inventory fast?

Three achievements are tied purely to how many movies you own: The Movie Enthusiast (250 movies), The Movie Collector (500 movies), and The Movie Empire (1000 movies). These are the grind achievements, and the gap between 500 and 1000 is where most players slow down.

You have three ways to stock up. The Market tab on your office computer lets you buy movies directly. The video guy out back shows up every Tuesday and Thursday with stock you can purchase. The Black Market tab on the same computer lets you order specific movies using SKU codes, which also ties into its own achievement.

To find a SKU code, pick up any VHS tape and press F to inspect it. The code appears in the left info panel. Entering one in the Black Market tab unlocks Off The Books, which is worth doing early since it's a quick $100 and 50 XP.

What's the fastest path to Business Is Booming?

Business Is Booming! requires $10,000 in total revenue, and it's held by only 43.48% of tracked players, making it one of the harder achievements despite not having a specific unlock condition. The key word is "total revenue," not cash on hand, so every sale counts toward it.

To accelerate this, promote the store using flyers to bring in more customers. Hold off on buying new movie stock when your shelves are already full. If your wage costs are eating into revenue, consider temporarily running with fewer staff. Every dollar that comes in counts, so high customer throughput matters more than any single expensive purchase.

How do you unlock the store expansion and genre achievements?

Big Store Energy requires unlocking all store expansions. Check the poster in your office to see the cost of each expansion tier. These are expensive, so plan your purchases around your cash flow rather than rushing them.

Certified Movie Buff asks you to unlock all movie genres. You start with Drama, Horror, and Adult. New genres unlock at levels 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19, so this one resolves itself as you level up normally. You don't need to do anything special beyond playing.

Holographic Showcase requires displaying 4 holographic movies in a display case. Holographic VHS tapes appear randomly when you purchase movies, most often with New Releases. Once you have four, place them in the special display cases found in the Decorations tab of the Catalog.

Late-game achievements: staff and arcade machines

Fully Staffed unlocks when you hire two employees. Your second hire becomes available at level 20, so this is a late-game milestone by design. Game On! requires buying an arcade machine, which unlocks at level 18. There are two machines available at $550 and $600 respectively. You only need to buy one to trigger the achievement.

Return Routine is the patience achievement: check in 1000 movies at the Return Station. The good news is that returns processed by your staff count toward the total, so assigning an employee to the Return Station means progress happens even when you're focused elsewhere.
