Universal Tower Defense Tier List: Best Units Ranked

Universal Tower Defense throws dozens of anime-inspired units at you and expects you to figure out which ones are worth your gems. After testing units across wave-clearing, boss stages, and late-game scaling, the gap between S-tier and D-tier is enormous. Pull the wrong characters and you'll stall out on mid-game content. Pull the right ones and the game practically plays itself.

Universal Tower Defense unit tier list

The table below ranks every available unit from S to D tier, based on their effectiveness at clearing enemy waves, scaling into late game, and providing team utility. Rankings are drawn from community testing and both Pocket Tactics and Beebom's April 2026 tier list research.

What makes an S-tier unit in UTD?

The five standout S-tier units from community testing share one trait: they don't just deal damage, they scale or provide utility that no other unit replicates.

Sung Jin-Woo is the unit most players target first. He spawns shadow armies, buffs their HP and damage simultaneously, and scales infinitely, meaning he stays relevant from the first wave to the hardest boss content. According to Beebom's testing, he's a "must-have that dominates all content."

Ragna works differently. He stuns himself to trigger an awakening state, gains massive buffs during that window, then deletes himself. The damage output during his awakening is comparable to Escanor-style mechanics, making him one of the best boss killers in the game.

Dragon Silver brings a different kind of value: control. He freezes enemies and enters a "Silver Battle Trance" that boosts his damage by 120%. For stalling high-HP waves while your other units catch up, he's the best option available.

Zaraki (Kenpachi) has a unique utility that no other unit offers. He removes elemental disadvantages from enemies, which sounds counterintuitive until you realize it strips away resistances and lets your full roster deal consistent damage. Combined with full AoE output, he ranks above Sasuke specifically because of that support angle.

Kirito (Kyito) is the hyper-carry of the ground role. His Virtual Mode stacks crit and damage multipliers to the point where he outperforms most hybrid units in sustained fights.

A-tier units worth building around

A-tier in Universal Tower Defense is where the support game lives. Three units here are worth discussing in detail.

Miku is the only unit that buffs both damage and range simultaneously, scaling her output based on her active music track. According to Beebom, she's considered essential for maximizing team DPS, and most high-level compositions run her as a permanent slot.

Sakuya is obtained through Virtual Mode and brings time-stop, stun, and self-damage buffs to the table. She's rated alongside Miku as a top-tier support, and the combination of both on one team is genuinely oppressive for wave control.

Law is the best non-secret ground unit available. His "Room" ability targets the strongest enemy anywhere on the map, not just in range, which makes him the go-to pick for eliminating leaks before they reach the end of the path.

B-tier and below: when are they actually useful?

Sasuke sits in B-tier despite being a recognizable name. His AoE stun is solid, but he lacks the unique scaling mechanics that push S-tier units ahead. He's a strong filler unit, not a foundation.

Ace fills a specific gap: burn damage that bypasses shields, with the added bonus of hitting flying units. If you don't have S-tier secret units that cover air, Ace is your best fallback according to Beebom's breakdown.

Zora is the most notable C-tier pick. She's the only non-Mythical unit that remains viable past the early game, using traps to stun and damage enemies. For free-to-play players, she's the most efficient use of a team slot until better units arrive.

Speedwagon earns a C-tier mention for a different reason: he generates currency. Running him early lets you deploy expensive units faster, which has real strategic value even if his combat stats are poor.

Avoid D-tier units in most situations. Isagi is particularly notable as a trap: his buff only activates when he fails to kill an enemy, making him unreliable as a carry. Greybeard is considered underpowered for his rarity, meaning even if you pull him, he's not worth the team slot.

Universal Tower Defense trait tier list

Traits are a separate layer of power on top of your units. Equipping the right trait to the right unit can meaningfully change how a character performs.

According to Pocket Tactics, S-tier traits like Astra, Eternal, and Fission represent the strongest options available. Prioritize rerolling toward these on your S-tier units before worrying about trait quality on anything below A-tier.

How do you get traits in Universal Tower Defense?

Traits require reroll items to unlock or change. The fastest way to get trait rerolls without spending is through active codes (more on those below). Once you have reroll items, head to the upgrade building with the Traits logo on the front. Speak to the NPC, select traits, choose the unit you want to roll on, and hit Reroll. If a unit has no trait yet, the first reroll assigns one. Subsequent rerolls replace whatever's already there, so don't reroll off an S-tier trait by accident.

How do you summon new units in Universal Tower Defense?

Summoning works through the summon building in the game's main square. Speak to the NPC at the desk to access available banners. Each banner features different mythical rarity units, so check what's currently available before spending.

According to Beebom, the cost structure is:

  • 1x Summon: 50 Gems
  • 10x Summon: 450 Gems (a slight discount versus single pulls)

Pocket Tactics lists single pulls at 50 gems and ten-pulls at 500 gems, suggesting the 450-gem ten-pull price may reflect a discount banner or version difference. Check the in-game cost before committing.

The most efficient way to build your gem reserves without spending is redeeming active codes. As of April 22, 2026, active codes include 2.25Patch! (5,000 Gems, 40 Trait Rerolls, 25 Relic Rerolls), ThankYouBeruMuch! (5,000 Gems, 25 Trait Rerolls, 10 Relic Rerolls), and ThankYouForUTDX! (10,000 Gems, 50 Trait Rerolls, 50 Relic Rerolls), among others listed by Pro Game Guides. Codes expire without warning, so redeem them as soon as possible.

To redeem codes, open Universal Tower Defense X in Roblox, press the Codes button on the right side of the screen, type or paste your code into the text box, and hit Redeem.

What game modes are available in Universal Tower Defense X?

Beyond the main wave-clearing gameplay, Universal Tower Defense X includes four distinct modes according to Pro Game Guides:

  • Story Mode: The main campaign progression path
  • Challenges: Special condition stages that test specific strategies
  • Virtual Realm: Unique gameplay experiences, and notably where Sakuya is obtained
  • Raids: Co-op encounters for groups of players

Virtual Realm is worth prioritizing early specifically because Sakuya is locked behind it, and she's one of the best support units in the game.
