The Complete Rotwood Weapon Upgrade Path Explained

Upgrading your weapons in Rotwood is one of the most impactful things you can do to survive deeper hunts, but the system has several distinct tiers that the game doesn't always explain clearly. Standard Fortifying at the weapon rack gets you started, but unlocking Weapon Research with Hamish and eventually crafting Imbued Weapons through the Proto-Weapon process is where the real power lives. This guide walks you through every stage, the exact materials required, and what pitfalls to avoid along the way.

What Are the Weapon Upgrade Tiers in Rotwood?

Rotwood organizes weapon power into three distinct upgrade phases. Understanding which phase you're in tells you exactly what to do next.

Tier 1: Fortifying (Levels 1 to 6)

Every weapon you pick up can be upgraded at its corresponding weapon rack in town. The rack for Hammers, Spears, Strikers, Cannons, and Bows each stores the weapons you've collected and lets you enhance them using material loots gathered from hunts. Upgrading increases both raw damage and the potency of a weapon's effect traits.

All normal weapons cap at Level 6 through standard Fortifying. If you're hitting a wall and can't push past that level, the answer isn't more materials. You need to unlock the next tier first.

Tier 2: Weapon Research (Levels 7 to 9)

Once a weapon reaches Level 6, further upgrades require Weapon Research, performed by talking to Hamish at the armory. This unlocks the path to Level 9 and costs:

  • 8 Stone Fortifying Ingots
  • 8 Frozen Fortifying Ingots

After completing Weapon Research, you can continue upgrading the weapon normally through the rack up to Level 9.

To go beyond Level 9 with a standard weapon, you need to equip a special gem (one-time use only), which opens the path to Level 12. This applies to normal weapons only. Imbued Weapons follow a different route entirely.

How Do Proto-Weapons Work?

Proto-Weapons are the gateway to the most powerful weapons in the game: Imbued Weapons. They're described as "potentially powerful" but come with a significant risk. Here's the full process.

Crafting a Proto-Weapon

To craft a Proto-Weapon, speak with Hamish and bring:

  • A weapon of the same type (for example, bring any Bow to craft a Proto-Bow)
  • 12 Corestones

You can only hold 1 Proto-Weapon per weapon type in your rack at any time. Proto-Weapons are crafted at Level 9 and cannot be upgraded further through normal means. They share the same skills as the starter weapon of their type and carry no special trait effects on their own.

Charging the Proto-Weapon

To transform a Proto-Weapon into an Imbued Weapon, you need to charge it. The only way to do this is:

  1. Equip the Proto-Weapon
  2. Complete a Super Frenzy hunt (you must have finished Frenzy 3 beforehand)
  3. Defeat the Imbued Boss Rot that appears during Super Frenzy

When you kill the Imbued Boss Rot, the Proto-Weapon absorbs its essence and becomes charged.

Finishing the Imbued Weapon

Once the Proto-Weapon is charged, return to Hamish to complete the crafting process. The resulting Imbued Weapon depends on which Imbued Boss Rot charged it. For example:

  • Charged by Imbued Mother Treek produces weapons like Rotten Judgment (Hammer), Corruption's Touch (Spear), or Rootbound Knot (Striker)
  • Charged by Imbued Owlitzer produces weapons like Nightfall Gavel (Hammer), Light Slayer (Spear), or Talon's Strike (Striker)

What Makes Imbued Weapons Special?

Imbued Weapons are the only weapons that can surpass Level 9. They start at Level 10 and can be upgraded all the way to Level 12, the current maximum in Rotwood. No other weapon type reaches this ceiling.

Beyond raw level, Imbued Weapons carry unique traits tied to the boss that charged them, making each one distinct depending on your source.

How Do Focus Hits and Critical Hits Affect Upgraded Weapons?

As your weapons grow stronger through upgrades, understanding the two main damage modifiers becomes more valuable.

Focus Hits are controlled outputs triggered by specific conditions tied to the weapon type. They deal more damage than normal attacks, though typically less than 2x. The blue damage number confirms a Focus Hit landed. Some weapon skills also trigger Focus Hits directly.

Critical Hits deal 2x damage but are chance-based rather than controlled. Gear and Powers collected during hunts influence your Critical Hit chance. The pink damage number marks a Critical Hit. Weapons like Sharpoon, Belle of the Ball, and Beakon of Hurt specifically increase Critical Hit chance while airborne, making aerial play especially rewarding with those picks.

What's the Best Weapon Upgrade Strategy for New Players?

If you're early in the game, prioritize these steps:

  1. Pick one weapon type and stick with it long enough to reach Level 6 through Fortifying.
  2. Farm Stone Fortifying Ingots and Frozen Fortifying Ingots so you can immediately perform Weapon Research with Hamish once you hit the cap.
  3. Don't rush Proto-Weapons until you've completed Frenzy 3, since you can't charge them without Super Frenzy access anyway.
  4. When attempting your first Super Frenzy with a Proto-Weapon, consider abandoning if the run looks like a loss. Abandoning preserves the Proto-Weapon, while failing breaks it and costs 6 Corestones to repair.
  5. Target the specific Imbued Boss Rot that produces the Imbued Weapon you want, since the outcome depends on which boss charges your Proto-Weapon.

Mastering the upgrade path in Rotwood transforms what feels like a gear ceiling into a clear progression ladder. Each tier has a defined cost and process, so once you know the steps, pushing to Level 12 Imbued Weapons is a matter of preparation rather than luck.
