Smalland: Survive the Wilds Review ...

Smalland: Survive the Wilds packs a surprisingly deep armor progression system for a game where you're the size of an acorn. From the basic Traveler's Armor you spawn with to scorpion-plated endgame sets, every piece of gear trades protection, mobility, and special perks in ways that genuinely change how you play. This guide breaks down every armor set in the game, explains what each one actually does, and tells you which NPCs unlock them.

How does armor work in Smalland?

Every armor piece carries three core stats: Protection (raw damage reduction), Cold Protection (survival in cold biomes), and Movement Speed modifiers (positive or negative percentage). Many sets also carry damage type resistances, such as Blunt Resistance, Edged Resistance, or Piercing Resistance, each reducing incoming damage of that type by 3% per piece. A handful of late-game sets layer on status effects like Poison Buildup, Frost Buildup, or Fire Buildup, and one set even provides passive Health Regeneration.

Armor is unlocked through NPCs scattered across the world. Each vendor or craftsperson teaches you a specific set, and you craft pieces at the appropriate station: Workbench, Stonecutter, Forge, or the late-game Wyrdweaver Table.

Stone Armor at the Stonecutter

Stone Armor at the Stonecutter

Early-game armor: what should you prioritize first?

Traveler's Armor (unlocked by default)

You start with this. The Traveler's Torso, Traveler's Gauntlets, and Traveler's Legs each give +3 Cold Protection and 100 durability. There is no Protection stat on any piece. Replace it as soon as possible.

Padded Armor and Light Armor (Herne)

Both sets are unlocked through Herne and crafted at the Workbench. Padded Armor is the cold-weather choice: the Padded Wrap gives +8 Protection and +9 Cold Protection, with bracers and breeches adding +4 Protection and +9 Cold Protection each. Movement speed stays at zero across the set.

Light Armor flips the priority toward speed. Every piece gives +2% Movement Speed, with the Light Singlet and Gauntlets each providing +8 Protection and the Light Leggings giving +4 Protection. If you're fighting fast enemies early on, the movement bonus is worth the cold protection trade-off.

Stone Armor (Kalev)

Kalev unlocks Stone Armor, crafted at the Stonecutter. This is your first real defensive set: the Stone Mask and limb pieces each give +8 Protection with +3% Piercing Resistance, while the Stone Breast steps up to +12 Protection. Every piece has 400 durability. The catch is a -2% Movement Speed penalty per piece, so wearing the full set slows you down noticeably. The Backer Stone Armor variant carries identical stats.

Mid-game armor: where the real choices begin

Primal Armor and Chitin Armor (Skadi)

Skadi teaches two sets. Primal Armor is the cold-specialist option: each piece gives +9 Cold Protection alongside +3% Blunt Resistance, with the Primal Tunic hitting +16 Protection and the remaining pieces at +12. Durability is 550 per piece, and movement speed takes a -2% hit per slot.

Chitin Armor trades cold protection for toughness. The Chitin Pauldron gives +16 Protection with +3% Edged Resistance, other pieces give +12, and durability matches Primal at 550. The speed penalty increases to -3% per piece, making this the slowest set at this tier.

Silkweave Armor (Lisandra)

Lisandra unlocks Silkweave Armor, crafted at the Workbench. This is the mobility set of the mid-game: every piece gives +2% Movement Speed, with the Silkweave Torso at +24 Protection and the other three pieces at +20. Durability jumps to 700. The spider-inspired design also carries +3% Piercing Resistance per piece. If you prefer a fast, aggressive playstyle, this is the set to aim for.

Regal Armor (Drustana)

Drustana unlocks Regal Armor, the bee-inspired set crafted at the Workbench. Stats mirror Silkweave in Protection values (Regal Plate at +24, others at +20) and durability (700), but movement speed sits at zero. The standout feature is the Simple Gliding Wings chest attachment, which grants the Gliding ability. This is the first set that lets you glide across the world.

Healer's Armor (Tuhala)

Tuhala sells one of the most distinctive sets in the game. Healer's Armor gives the Healer's Mask and Guard pieces +20 Protection, the Healer's Chestplate +24, and all pieces carry +6 Cold Protection. What makes it unique: every piece provides +0.16667 Health Regeneration per second and -3% Incoming Poison. The full set stacks that regen across four slots, making it extremely effective for sustained fights or poison-heavy zones.

Formic Armor and Bone Armor (Mirmek)

Mirmek unlocks two sets. Formic Armor is crafted at the Stonecutter: the Formic Chestpiece gives +28 Protection with +3% Blunt Resistance, other pieces give +24, and durability reaches 800. Movement speed stays neutral.

Bone Armor, also from Mirmek, steps up to +32 Protection on the Bone Plating and +28 on other pieces, with +6 Cold Protection and +3% Piercing Resistance. Durability hits 1,000 per piece. This is a significant defensive jump for the tier.

Late-game armor: high protection and special abilities

Ironwing Armor (Nok)

Nok unlocks Ironwing Armor, crafted at the Forge. The Ironwing Breastplate gives +32 Protection with +3% Edged Resistance, other pieces give +28, and durability sits at 1,000. The chest slot includes Sapphire Gliding Wings (2,000 durability), the highest-durability wing option in the game. Movement speed stays neutral.

Pyrite Armor (Historian)

The Historian teaches Pyrite Armor, also at the Forge. Stats are identical to Ironwing in Protection values (Pyrite Pauldron at +32, others at +28) and durability (1,000), but the resistance switches to +3% Piercing and Cold Protection bumps to +5. Straightforward, well-rounded defensive gear.

Serrated Armor (Mantis)

Unlocked through the Mantis source, Serrated Armor is crafted at the Stonecutter. Protection values are lower than Ironwing (Serrated Chest at +28, others at +24) with 600 durability, putting it more in the mid-game range despite its source. It carries +4 Cold Protection and +3% Pierce Resistance.

Icarus Armor (Malik the Ornathomancer)

Malik the Ornathomancer unlocks the Icarus Armor set, crafted at the Forge. The Icarus Pauldron gives +40 Protection with +3% Blunt Resistance, other pieces give +36, and durability reaches 1,200. The set includes Icarus Wings, which grant both Gliding and the Gliding Upwards Boost ability, making vertical traversal significantly more flexible than earlier wing sets.

Scorpiolaminate Armor (Sarnak)

Sarnak unlocks Scorpiolaminate Armor, crafted at the Forge. This is among the highest base protection sets in the game: the Scorpiolaminate Chest gives +44 Protection, other pieces give +40, and durability reaches 1,400. Blunt Resistance sits at +3% per piece. Movement speed is neutral. If raw survivability is the priority, this is one of the strongest options available.

Rodent Armor and White Rodent Armor (Mouse)

Both sets are crafted at the Forge. Rodent Armor is a heavy defensive set: the Rodent Chest gives +40 Protection with +9 Cold Protection and +3% Blunt Resistance. The trade-off is a -3% Pierce Resistance penalty per piece and significant movement speed penalties (chest at -6%, vambrace and greaves at -4%). Durability is 1,500.

White Rodent Armor keeps the same Protection values but pushes Cold Protection much higher: the chest gives +20 Cold Protection and the remaining pieces give +15 to +20. The set adds +75% Poison Buildup resistance but introduces a +100% Fire Buildup vulnerability. Movement speed penalties are slightly lower on the helmet (-2%) but remain heavy on the chest (-6%). Use this specifically when facing cold environments or poison-heavy enemies.

Tyrant Armor (Eadric's Workbench)

Tyrant Armor is not a full set. It consists only of the Tyrant's Crown (head, +40 Protection, 1,750 durability) and Tyrant's Wings (1,750 durability, Gliding plus Gliding Upwards Boost). The wings have the highest durability of any wing option in the game.

Endgame and special sets

Wyrdweaver Armor

Crafted at the Wyrdweaver Table, this set is built for Wyrd-based playstyles. Every piece gives +40 Protection, +6 Cold Protection, and +3% Blunt Resistance at 1,400 durability. The bonuses are what matter: the Wyrd-corrupted Hood reduces Wyrd Cost by 15%, the Wyrd-corrupted Robe adds +50 Max Wyrd, and the Manniquettes and Skirt each add +25 Max Wyrd. Running the full set gives +100 Max Wyrd total plus the cost reduction.

Crystal Imbued Armors

Crystal variants are upgraded versions of existing sets, crafted at the Wyrdweaver Table. Each adds a status-effect modifier to the base set's stats:

  • Crystallized Pyrite Armor: adds +75% Poison Buildup resistance to Pyrite's base stats
  • Crystallized Rodent Armor: adds +90% Frost Buildup resistance to Rodent Armor's base stats
  • Crystallized White Rodent Armor: adds frost resistance on top of the White Rodent base
  • Crystallized Scorpiolaminate Armor: imbued with amber crystals for fire resistance
  • Crystallized Ironwing Armor: imbued with green crystals, described as granting healing per the wiki

Faction Armors

Faction variants of Formic, Regal, Silkweave, and Primal armor exist with slightly different stat distributions compared to their standard counterparts. The Faction Silkweave Suit, for example, keeps the +2% Movement Speed bonus but drops Cold Protection compared to the standard version.

Special Armors

The Rufous Mask is a standalone helmet (1,750 durability) that grants the Ground Smash ability. The Haunted Helmet and its angered variant are seasonal items available during the Samhain event, giving +28 Protection, +5 Cold Protection, and +3% Pierce Resistance at 1,000 durability.

Armor comparison: key sets at a glance

Loading table...

What's the best armor set for each playstyle?

For maximum protection: Scorpiolaminate Armor tops the raw protection chart with +44 on the chest and +40 on other pieces at 1,400 durability, with no movement penalty.

For mobility builds: Silkweave Armor or the Faction Silkweave Suit give +2% Movement Speed per piece, the only sets with a positive speed modifier alongside meaningful protection.

For cold biomes: White Rodent Armor offers the highest Cold Protection in the game (+20 on most pieces) but comes with heavy fire vulnerability. Primal Armor is the safer cold-weather alternative with no elemental downsides.

For Wyrd casters: Wyrdweaver Armor is the only set designed around the Wyrd system, providing +100 Max Wyrd across the full set plus a 15% Wyrd Cost reduction.

For sustained combat: Healer's Armor from Tuhala is hard to beat for long fights, stacking passive health regeneration across four pieces alongside poison resistance.

For traversal: Tyrant's Wings have the highest durability of any wing option (1,750) and grant the Gliding Upwards Boost. Pair them with Tyrant's Crown for the full setup, or mix with another chest piece since the Tyrant set has no chest slot.
