The resource that unlocks everything
Chitin sits at the center of progression in Smalland: Survive the Wilds. You need it for your first real weapons, your first proper armor set, and a handful of traversal tools that make getting around the world much faster. The good news is that chitin drops from a wide range of insects, so you are never far from a reliable source. The bad news is that some of those insects will happily fight back. Here is everything you need to farm chitin efficiently and spend it wisely.
What is chitin and why does it matter?
Chitin is the hard material that makes up insect exoskeletons. In Smalland, it is classified as a creature-dropped resource obtained primarily from beetle-like enemies. That classification matters practically: beetles are common, respawn reliably, and sit in accessible areas even early in the game.
The material feeds into a large number of gear recipes spanning weapons, armor, and utility items. Skipping chitin farming means skipping the mid-game entirely, so building a consistent supply early pays off for the rest of your run.
Which insects drop chitin?
The following creatures all drop chitin when killed:
- Black Widow
- Grasshopper
- Green Beetle
- Lubber
- Nocturnal Grasshopper
- Sawyer Beetle
- Spider Matriarch
- Wasp
- Wasp Queen
That list splits into two practical tiers. Green Beetles and Sawyer Beetles are your bread-and-butter farming targets: they spawn consistently, drop reliable amounts of chitin, and are manageable with basic gear. Grasshoppers and Lubbers are softer targets that work well when you are just starting out. The Spider Matriarch and Wasp Queen are boss-tier encounters that drop significantly more chitin per kill but require preparation.
How to farm chitin efficiently
After testing beetle routes across the starting areas, a few habits separate fast farmers from players who are constantly running short:
- Target Green Beetles and Sawyer Beetles first. Both are reliable daytime spawns and drop chitin consistently. They are aggressive, but their attack patterns are readable.
- Hunt Grasshoppers during the day. Regular Grasshoppers are passive enough to approach carefully and go down quickly. Good for topping off your stock without much risk.
- Run Nocturnal Grasshopper routes at night. If you have decent gear, night hunts on Nocturnal Grasshoppers add chitin fast. Gear up before attempting this.
- Save boss fights for stock runs. The Wasp Queen and Spider Matriarch drop large quantities of chitin per kill. Once you can handle them, these fights are the most efficient chitin source in the game.
- Keep your inventory light. Chitin farming means moving between multiple enemy locations. Carrying unnecessary items slows you down and reduces the loot you can pick up per trip.
What can you craft with chitin?
Chitin feeds into three crafting stations and several NPC-gated recipes. Here is the full breakdown of what the Smalland wiki documents.
Workbench recipes
The Chitin Spear costs the most chitin of the three but gives you reach and is worth prioritizing once you have a stable supply.
Chitin armor set (Stonecutter + Skadi NPC)
All four pieces of the core Chitin armor set require the Stonecutter station and must be unlocked through the NPC Skadi
The Chitin Pauldron is the most expensive single piece at 16 Chitin. Budget for that when planning your farming runs.

Regal armor (Drustana NPC)
Chitin also feeds into the Regal armor set, crafted through the NPC Drustana:
Loom and Spindle recipes
Two utility items at the Loom and Spindle also require chitin, per the wiki:
- Grapple Gun: 10 Chitin + 10 Fiber String
- Hook: 1 Chitin + 2 Fiber String
The Grapple Gun is one of the best reasons to keep a chitin surplus. Mobility in Smalland changes dramatically once you have one.
What is Heavy Chitin and how do you get it?
Heavy Chitin is a separate, upgraded resource. It drops from late-game enemies in the Greylands and Ruins zones. You can also produce it yourself at the Furnace using 10 Chitin + 1 Clay Mortar + 1 Charcoal per batch.
Heavy Chitin feeds into late-game armor sets including Bone Armor, Formic Armor, and Ironwing Armor, plus weapons like the Chitin Bow, Composite Bow, and Stinger Lance. Think of it as the endgame evolution of the same resource loop you started with.

Chitin vs Heavy Chitin: which should you farm?
The answer depends entirely on where you are in the game. Early and mid-game, standard chitin from Green Beetles and Grasshoppers covers everything you need. Once you unlock the Furnace and start pushing into the Greylands, Heavy Chitin becomes the priority, and you can either farm it directly from late-game enemies or convert your chitin stockpile.

Smalland sits firmly in the action games genre, and the chitin loop reflects that: combat is the primary driver of progression, so getting comfortable with beetle hunting early sets you up for every upgrade tier that follows.
