Solid Snake has arrived in Rainbow Six Siege, and this is not a drill. The legendary stealth infiltrator from the Metal Gear Solid series steps into Ubisoft's tactical shooter as a fully permanent, playable Operator with Operation Silent Hunt, launching March 3. Between his intel-gathering radar gadget, his scavenging ability, and a brand-new suppressed sidearm, Solid Snake brings a playstyle unlike anything else in the current Operator roster. Here is everything you need to know to hit the ground running.
What Makes Solid Snake Unique in Rainbow Six Siege?
Most Attackers in Rainbow Six Siege come equipped with a single gadget and a fixed utility loadout. Solid Snake breaks that mold entirely with two interlocking systems: the Soliton Radar MKIII and his On-Site Procurement (OSP) ability. Together, they make him one of the most adaptable Operators ever added to the game.
How Does the Soliton Radar MKIII Work?
The Soliton Radar MKIII is a handheld device that displays a floorplan of Snake's immediate surroundings and detects nearby enemies. The radar covers the floor Snake is currently on, plus any connected staircases. The green lines on the display carry tactical meaning:
- Dotted wall lines indicate soft walls that can be breached.
- Striped floor backgrounds mark soft floors open to destruction.
- Green readout means the area is clear (though not necessarily safe, as explained below).
- Yellow readout signals an active CCTV camera being watched by a Defender in the scanned area.
- Red readout confirms one or more active enemies are detected nearby.
The radar's most powerful feature is precision mode. When activated, precision mode displays the exact position and vision cone of every detected enemy in real time. This intel is invaluable for solo pushes and coordinated team executions alike. Precision mode runs on a limited number of charges with a cooldown between uses, so saving it for critical moments pays off.
info
Activate precision mode right before a coordinated breach. Sharing Snake's radar intel with your team over comms can turn a 50/50 push into a clean entry.
How to Counter Solid Snake's Radar as a Defender
Defenders are notified the moment Snake's radar detects them, giving them time to reposition or push back. That notification window is your opportunity to act, but there are also several Operators who can deceive or block the radar entirely:
Beyond those direct counters, Snake's radar only detects default cameras. Operators who bring their own camera gadgets into a match, such as Valkyrie, Maestro, Echo, Mozzie, or Skopós, can watch rooms without appearing on Snake's display. A green "All Clear" readout does not mean a room is unobserved.
warning
Never treat a green radar readout as a guaranteed safe entry. Alibi decoys, Vigil's cloak, Mute jammers, and non-default cameras can all fool the system. Always pair radar intel with sound cues and teammate callouts.
How Does On-Site Procurement Change Snake's Playstyle?
On-Site Procurement (OSP) is Snake's secondary ability and the mechanic that sets his utility game apart from every other Attacker. While standard Operators start a round with a fixed supply of one gadget type, Snake carries five distinct gadget slots:
- Frag grenades
- Stun grenades
- Smoke grenades
- Impact EMPs
- Breach charges
The catch: Snake begins each round with only one item in one of his five slots. To fill the rest, he must scavenge. Every eliminated Operator drops a utility pouch (team-killed Operators do not drop one). Snake selects an empty slot using his switch ability, then interacts with or runs over a pouch to claim that gadget type. Each slot holds a maximum of one gadget at a time.
This creates a dynamic where Snake grows more dangerous as a round progresses and more Operators are eliminated. Spotted a Denali laser grid blocking your path? Loot an impact EMP from a fallen teammate or enemy. Burned your frag grenade flushing a roamer? Pick up a replacement from their utility pouch.
info
OSP utility pouches drop from any eliminated Operator except those who are team-killed. Prioritize picking up gadget types you are missing before pushing the objective.
What Is Solid Snake's Weapon Loadout?
Snake brings two primary weapon options and a brand-new secondary to Rainbow Six Siege.
Primary Weapons
- PMR90A2 designated marksman rifle: A precise, high-damage option suited for players who prefer controlled, longer-range engagements.
- F2 assault rifle: A familiar Attacker rifle receiving a notable buff in Operation Silent Hunt. The F2 now supports grip attachments, including the horizontal grip, angled grip, and vertical grip for recoil reduction.
Secondary Weapon: The TACIT .45
Snake's signature sidearm is the TACIT .45 pistol, a brand-new weapon introduced with this Operator. It features an integrated suppressor and a reflex sight, letting Snake silently neutralize enemy utility (and enemies themselves) without alerting the full team. The suppressor makes it particularly effective for quietly destroying cameras or gadgets before committing to a push.
What Is the [REDACTED] Event?
A few weeks after Operation Silent Hunt launches, a limited-time event arrives with a name that is currently kept under wraps. What is confirmed: Solid Snake teams up with Zero (Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell) in a new 4v4 infiltration-themed gameplay mode set on a modified version of Nighthaven Labs, redesigned to reference an iconic Metal Gear Solid location.
The event collection adds more cosmetic outfits dressing Rainbow Six Siege Operators as Metal Gear Solid characters, including Jackal as Gray Fox and Ash as Meryl. The Operation Silent Hunt Battle Pass also unlocks Snake immediately at season start and includes a Psycho Mantis outfit for Smoke.

Beyond Solid Snake, Operation Silent Hunt brings map modernizations and a round of Operator balancing focused on entry and roaming.
Map Updates
Three maps are receiving modernization updates when the season goes live:
- Villa
- Coastline
- Oregon
Operator Balancing Changes

Operation Silent Hunt balance patch
The shield barricade change is particularly significant for roamer-heavy strategies, as it removes a reliable fallback escape route for shield Operators.
Is Solid Snake Worth Playing in Rainbow Six Siege?
For players who enjoy intel-gathering Operators, Solid Snake sits at the top of the Attacker roster the moment Operation Silent Hunt drops. His Soliton Radar MKIII provides a level of real-time positional awareness that no other Attacker currently offers, and precision mode gives your entire team actionable callouts when used correctly. The OSP system rewards aggressive play and smart looting, making Snake more effective the longer a round runs.
The main skill requirement is learning the radar's limitations: knowing which Defenders counter it, recognizing when a green readout might be misleading, and managing precision mode charges for maximum impact. Once those habits are in place, Snake becomes one of the most rewarding Operators to master in the current meta.
