The Boar Whistle is one of those Windrose items that most players walk right past because they're looking for it in the wrong place. You can't craft it, you can't buy it from any merchant, and it won't drop from any enemy. It lives on a Foothills island altar north of Brethren of the Coast, and getting it requires a short but deliberate detour after your first boss kill. The payoff is a Legendary-rarity reusable summon that spawns your boar companion Truffle on demand, right at your feet, whenever you need him.
What does the Boar Whistle actually do?
The Boar Whistle is classified as a Miscellaneous Consumable with Legendary rarity. Blowing it spawns Truffle at your current position. Truffle deals blunt damage, which rapidly depletes enemy poise bars and triggers frequent stuns, making him particularly effective against builds that lack stagger tools like rapier or pistol setups.
Beyond raw damage, Truffle draws aggro from nearby enemies. That gives you room to reposition, pop a bandage, or flank a target while they're busy charging a boar. The whistle goes grey after use until the cooldown resets, so slot it on your hotbar for instant access the moment it's available again.
Truffle's level matches your own level at the time you receive the whistle. If you grab it early, he scales with you. If you want a stronger base Truffle, push to a higher level before making the altar offering.
How to reach the Foothills altar
You can access this area after defeating the first boss and sailing toward Tortuga. The altar sits on a small Foothills island north of Brethren of the Coast waters. On the map, look for a single Ancient Village POI, not a multi-part village cluster. That single-POI marker is your destination.
Dock at the island and head toward the rocky outcrop. Stairs lead up to a statue-flanked ancient altar surrounded by three ruined stone buildings. Those ruins are where your offering materials come from.
The perimeter around the altar is patrolled by 8 to 10 wolves, including alpha variants. Bring bandages, a tent, and bleed-resistant gear before you sail. Undergeared solo players will struggle here.

What offerings does the altar need?
Interacting with the altar reveals the two materials required for the offering. Here's the requirements:
- 20 Meat (from wolves patrolling the altar area)
- 3 Relics (one from each of the three ancient chests inside the ruined buildings)
The wolves and goats near the altar fight each other constantly. Let them brawl, then clean up the survivors to farm your 20 Meat without burning through your own supplies. The three ancient chests are inside the ruined buildings flanking the altar, one chest per building.
After making the offering, you receive 1 Boar Whistle and +100 experience points.
How to Get the Boar Whistle
- Defeat the first boss and unlock access to the Foothills region.
- Stock your ship with bandages, food buffs, and bleed-resistant gear.
- Sail north from Brethren of the Coast to the small Foothills island with the single Ancient Village POI.
- Dock and climb the rocky outcrop stairs toward the statue-flanked altar.
- Clear the 8 to 10 wolves on the perimeter, using the goat-wolf fights to conserve resources. Collect 20 Meat.
- Loot the three ancient chests inside the ruined buildings for 3 Relics (or Ritual Oil, depending on your session).
- Interact with the altar and confirm the offering.
- Receive the Boar Whistle and 100 XP.
Keep at least one free inventory slot open before completing the altar interaction. The whistle can be missed permanently if your inventory is full when the reward triggers. There is no confirmed way to retrieve it afterward.
How to use Truffle effectively in combat
Summon Truffle inside combat range, not in open terrain where he may lag behind enemies. Let him engage first: his blunt attacks break poise quickly, and the resulting stun window is when you deal your heaviest damage. Once he locks aggro, you can freely flank, heal, or reposition.
If Truffle dies or despawns, wait for the whistle cooldown before resummoning. Pair the summon with food buffs since Truffle doesn't compete for those slots.
In co-op, the optimal play is to stagger summons across players. Player one pops Truffle, then player two summons their own when the first cooldown aligns. This keeps a boar on the field continuously during extended boss fights, especially when the party is underleveled for the encounter.
Truffle performs particularly well in Foothills boss fights like Hands, where his poise-breaking and aggro draw lets you manage add packs while dealing with the main target.
Is the Boar Whistle worth getting early?
Short answer: yes, and sooner is better. The whistle is strongest the moment you unlock it because your gear is still limited and enemies can overwhelm you quickly. Boss fights and multi-enemy encounters are where Truffle earns his keep, splitting incoming damage and creating stun openings that would otherwise require specific weapon types to generate.
The whistle is reusable with no per-use cost. There is no reason to save it. Make it part of your standard combat rotation as soon as you have it.
