I'm equal parts hopeful and terrified of a potential Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake — here's what I need Ubisoft to change, and what should be left alone entirely | TechRadar

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced drops you into the Caribbean as Edward Kenway with very little hand-holding. The game does not follow the RPG structure of recent Assassin's Creed entries — there are no skill trees or levels. Everything comes down to resources, gear, and how well you manage your ship. Whether you're new to the original or returning after more than a decade, these tips will save you hours of wasted sailing and missed loot.

What should you do first in AC Black Flag Resynced?

The biggest mistake new players make is getting sidetracked by Cape Bonavista's treasure chests or Havana's side activity markers right out of the gate. Resist that urge. Push through the main story until you unlock Great Inagua, which opens after completing the 15th main mission, This Old Cove.

Most of the game's core systems are gated behind that point. The Jackdaw itself doesn't become yours until the 7th main mission, The Treasure Fleet, and ship upgrades, Templar Hunts, and your hideout all follow from there. Trying to play the open world before unlocking Great Inagua means grinding without most of the tools the game gives you.

Once you have the hideout, upgrade it early. Improvements to Great Inagua increase passive income and unlock additional Jackdaw upgrade options, making it one of the highest-return investments in the early game.

How do you upgrade the Jackdaw efficiently?

The Jackdaw is the center of everything in Black Flag Resynced. Naval combat, exploration, and progression all run through it. Prioritize Hull upgrades for more ship health and Broadside Cannons for increased damage output. These two categories carry you through the majority of early and mid-game naval encounters.

Boarding disabled ships instead of sinking them outright is the single best habit to build. Time pauses during boarding, which means you can repair the Jackdaw mid-fight while every other enemy ship stays exactly where you left them, damaged and waiting. You also take the full cargo rather than watching it sink.

Use your Spyglass before engaging any vessel. It shows cargo type, ship level, and strength rating. The best hauls come from ships carrying wood and metal, which are the primary materials for Jackdaw upgrades. Brigs tend to carry metal, while Schooners carry a mix of rum, sugar, and wood. Tag ships after scoping them to track their position during pursuit.

Selling surplus rum and sugar is the fastest early money-making method. Those two commodities have no crafting value for Edward's gear, so converting them into Reales at any General Store is always the right call.

How do you make money fast?

The target to aim for early is 21,000 Reales. That buys both the Officer's Rapiers and Spanish Officer Pistols from any General Store, and those two weapons carry Edward through the vast majority of the game. The only superior options require completing all Naval and Assassin Contracts, which takes considerably longer.

Reaching 21,000 Reales is achievable as early as Sequence 3 by completing Assassin Contracts and opening chests on early-accessible islands like Nassau, Havana, Cape Bonavista, and Salt Key Bank. Selling looted rum and sugar accelerates this significantly.

If you need animal pelts for Edward's crafting upgrades and have enough Reales, buying them from shops is faster than hunting. Hunting is worth doing when the game teaches it to you after getting the Jackdaw, but once money is flowing, shops remove the time cost.

Advanced naval tactics: forts, fleets, and wanted levels

Conquering Naval Forts becomes available starting in Sequence 5, Memory 1. Captured forts fire their long-range mortars at enemy vessels automatically, which turns difficult multi-ship encounters into much more manageable fights. Lure tough pursuers near a fort you control and let the artillery share the load. Start with the low-difficulty forts near Great Inagua, Nassau, and Salt Key Bank — their difficulty ratings are visible directly on the world map as red dots on the fort icon. Capturing a fort also clears fog of war from the surrounding sea region permanently.

For Kenway's Fleet, prioritize capturing Frigates and Men o' War over smaller vessels. These ship types carry the largest cargo capacities and the highest combat stats, which are both needed to clear hazardous trade routes. Men o' War begin appearing as pursuers once your Wanted Level reaches 3 or 4, and Frigates typically travel with convoys. Once your heavy warships have secured a dangerous route, you can send faster Schooners on low-tier missions without worrying about their limited combat capability.

Raising your Wanted Level deliberately has real upside. Hunters sent after you include Brigs, Frigates, and Men o' War carrying substantial cargo. Looting and capturing these ships is more profitable than paying bribes to clear your wanted status.

Combat and stealth tips you shouldn't skip

Black Flag Resynced does not reward button-mashing. A few specific habits make ground combat much cleaner.

  • Tag enemies with Eagle Vision before entering any restricted area. Tagged enemies show through walls, letting you time movements precisely rather than reacting to surprises.
  • Check sword descriptions for takedown chain counts. Swords that support chained takedowns let you look at the next nearby enemy immediately after a kill to defeat them without breaking their guard.
  • Quick pistol shots (hold R2/RT, press Triangle/Y) fire at heavy enemies without entering aim mode. This is the fastest way to deal with armored threats in close quarters.
  • Area Loot is an Accessibility Preset option worth turning on. It loots the surrounding area with a single button press instead of requiring interaction with each body individually.
  • Smoke bombs and rope darts exist for a reason. Pull them out when surrounded rather than trying to counter-chain your way through a crowd.

For naval combat specifically, open every engagement with the mortar from long range (L1/LB on controller, Q on keyboard). It deals solid damage before you close the distance, reducing the punishment you take during the broadside exchange. Switch to half-sail for tighter turns during close-range maneuvering — the sail icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen shows your current setting.

What else should you know before playing?

A few smaller details that save frustration:

  • Hovering over named locations on the map screen shows a full list of viewpoints, collectibles, treasure, fauna, and flora at that location. Essential for 100% runs and useful for targeted material farming.
  • Audio cues signal nearby chests. A shimmering sound plays as you approach one. Activate Eagle Vision to confirm the location.
  • Camera direction controls ship weapons. The Jackdaw fires whatever weapon faces the direction you're looking. Adjust the camera deliberately during combat rather than relying on auto-targeting.
  • The pathfinder line lets you sail hands-free. Activate it, then hold Y/Triangle (or E on keyboard) to have the ship follow the route automatically.
  • Crewmember dialogue is useful. Adéwalé and others comment on vessels and points of interest when you use the Spyglass, including warnings when a target outclasses the Jackdaw's current strength.

For everything new in this version of the game, the full breakdown of every change in Black Flag Resynced covers what's different from the 2013 original, including reworked combat and revised tailing missions.
