Mario Kart World Review

Nintendo dropped Mario Kart World version 1.6.1 on April 9, 2026, and while it is a small one, the two fixes it contains are exactly the kind of quiet annoyances that can ruin a session without you ever quite knowing why.

What broke before this patch

The first bug targeted here involves speed boosts during rail rides. Specifically, if you landed into a rail ride after a Jump Boost or similar action, the game would sometimes just... not give you the speed boost. No visual cue, no momentum, nothing. For a game where every fraction of a second counts in competitive play, that kind of inconsistency is a real problem.

The second issue was more disruptive. Players running a session with 3 or more people in Multiplayer could trigger a full game-ending crash simply by switching between TV mode and handheld or tabletop mode. That is not a niche edge case. Switch 2 owners swap display modes regularly, and having the whole session collapse because of it is the sort of thing that sends group chats sideways fast.

The full version 1.6.1 patch notes

Nintendo kept the notes brief on their official support page. Here is exactly what version 1.6.1 addresses:

  • Fixed an issue where you would sometimes not get a speed boost upon landing after starting a rail ride following a Jump Boost or similar action.
  • Fixed an issue where the game would sometimes end when switching between TV mode and handheld mode or tabletop mode after starting a game with three or more players in Multiplayer.

Where 1.6.1 fits in the update timeline

This patch follows closely behind version 1.6.0, which Nintendo released at the end of March 2026. That was a much bigger drop, adding Bob-omb Blast to the Battle mode lineup alongside various adjustments and fixes. Bob-omb Blast now sits alongside Balloon Battle and Coin Runners as the third Battle mode option in the game.

Version 1.6.1 reads like a direct follow-up to 1.6.0, cleaning up issues that either surfaced during the Bob-omb Blast rollout or were flagged shortly after. That is a fairly common pattern with Nintendo's post-launch support: a major content update ships, players stress-test everything, and a smaller cleanup patch arrives within a week or two.

A small patch, but the right one

Neither fix here is headline-grabbing. There is no new content, no balance shakeup, no surprise character unlock. The key here is that Nintendo is clearly paying attention to how the game behaves in real play conditions, not just in controlled testing. A rail boost that silently fails and a multiplayer crash tied to a core Switch 2 feature are both the kind of bugs that erode trust if they stick around.

For anyone who has been putting serious hours into Mario Kart World since launch, version 1.6.1 is a quiet but welcome cleanup. If you want to stay across everything the game has received since launch, browse more guides covering the full update history and mode breakdowns.

With Bob-omb Blast now stable and these edge cases resolved, the next question is what Nintendo has planned for the next major content update. Given the pace of post-launch support so far, it probably will not be a long wait. Make sure to check out more:
