Stealth in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is not just a style option. It is a legitimate system built into the game's level design, with dedicated patrol routes, elevated perches, and hidden ledges placed specifically to reward patient players. Master it early and you will clear encounters faster, earn more studs per mission, and make real progress toward the "I am the shadows." trophy, which requires 100 stealth takedowns total.
How do stealth takedowns work?
The core rule is simple: enemies must not know you are there. When a guard is unaware of your position, their body highlights red and a prompt appears above their head. That prompt is your signal to act. Pressing the Focus button (R1 on PlayStation, RB on Xbox) at that moment triggers the takedown animation instantly and silently.
Unlike standard combat finishers, stealth takedowns do not require a filled combo meter or a built-up takedown gauge. That makes them especially forgiving for players who have not yet upgraded their combat skills or built up a strong multiplier chain.
Enemies follow fixed patrol routes, so patience pays off. Watch a guard complete one full loop before committing to an approach. Sprinting directly at them from the front will trigger detection immediately.
If an enemy spots you partially, a question mark appears above their head. Back off into cover and wait for it to disappear before attempting a stealth approach again.

What are the 3 types of stealth takedowns?
There are three distinct stealth takedown types, each requiring a different position relative to the target.
The Perch Takedown and Ledge Takedown are where most players leave studs on the table. Levels are built with gargoyles, rafters, rooftop edges, and pipes that exist specifically for these angles. If you are only taking enemies from behind on the ground, you are ignoring two-thirds of the system.

How to perform stealth takedowns
Step 1: Read the patrol pattern
Before moving, observe the guard's full route. Most enemies in indoor bases and rooftop areas follow predictable loops. Wait for them to turn away from your position before approaching.
Step 2: Choose your angle
Decide whether a rear approach, a drop from above, or a ledge grab gives you the cleanest line to the target. Elevated routes are almost always safer because they keep you out of peripheral sightlines while you reposition between takedowns.
Step 3: Move into position
Walk, do not sprint. Running toward an enemy from the front triggers detection. Use shadows, cover objects, and overhead paths to close the distance.
Step 4: Wait for the prompt
The enemy's body will highlight red and the takedown prompt will appear. Do not press the button early. Attacking before the prompt appears may break stealth and force open combat.
Step 5: Press Focus (R1 / RB)
The takedown animation plays instantly. The elimination is silent, and nearby guards will not react unless you move recklessly immediately afterward.
Step 6: Pause before chaining
After a successful takedown, stop moving aggressively. Nearby enemies can still notice suspicious activity if you rush toward the next target. Use the environment between eliminations.
Once any enemy fully detects you (the question mark becomes an exclamation point), stealth takedowns shut off entirely for that encounter. You will need to fight through standard combat, building your multiplier and filling the takedown meter the normal way.
Why bother with stealth at all?
The stud bonus alone makes it worth learning. Stealth eliminations grant larger stud rewards than standard combat kills. Clear a full room quietly and you will walk away with noticeably more currency than if you had brawled through it.
There is also a skill tree upgrade on the Combat side that generates Focus when you take down an enemy quietly. That creates a feedback loop where stealth play directly fuels your ability to use Focus-based abilities more frequently. If you are grinding studs to unlock characters and vehicles, pairing stealth with the right upgrades accelerates the process significantly. For a deeper look at maximizing your stud income, the stud farming guide covers multiplier tricks and other farming methods that stack well with stealth play.
Beyond the economy, stealth reduces raw difficulty. Thinning out a group of guards before a fight starts means fewer enemies attacking simultaneously when combat does break out.
The "I am the shadows." trophy requires 100 total stealth takedowns across the campaign. Replaying earlier missions in Free Play is a reliable way to farm this count if you missed opportunities on first run.
When should you use stealth?
Late-game levels introduce tougher enemy types in larger groups. Stealth becomes less optional and more of a survival tool in those sections, since even a few quiet eliminations before a fight significantly change the odds.
