LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight ...

Studs are everything in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Every vehicle, suit, Batcave prop, and unlockable character has a price tag, and reaching 100% completion means spending millions of them. Smashing random objects will get you there eventually, but knowing how the Stud Combo Multiplier works, which upgrades to prioritize, and a few tricks that most players walk right past will cut that grind down dramatically.

What are studs and why do they matter?

Studs are the game's primary currency, used to purchase vehicles, suits for all characters, unlockable characters, and Batcave Props to customize your base. They come in five colors, each with a different value.

Bronze, silver, and gold studs are common in breakable objects throughout the world. Blue and purple studs are rarer and appear in specific locations. One thing to keep in mind: studs disappear if you don't collect them quickly after they drop, so don't hang back after smashing a cluster of objects.

How does the Stud Combo Multiplier work?

The Stud Combo Multiplier sits in the upper-right corner of the screen and starts at 1x. Collecting studs builds it up toward 2x, and certain upgrades push that ceiling even higher. Every stud you pick up while the multiplier is active gets boosted by the current value, so the difference between opening a chest at 1x versus max multiplier is enormous.

The key insight here: the multiplier is a resource you need to manage actively, not just a passive bonus. Build it up before you touch anything high-value.

Which upgrades should you unlock first?

Head to the Skills menu from the Map screen and focus on the Exploration tree. These are the upgrades that directly affect your stud income:

If you have extra Gold Bricks after grabbing those essentials, Collectible Detective from the Exploration tree helps you find hidden treasures and chests faster, which indirectly boosts your stud income. Any skills that expand your stealth takedown options also pay off thanks to the Stealthy Studs synergy in the Combat tree.

How to get the free Stud Cache

This one is easy to miss. From the Pause menu, go to Options, then navigate to the Extras tab. You'll find a section labeled Lego Group Online Survey. Here's the full process:

  1. Select the survey option. You'll be directed to the LEGO Online website (via QR code on some platforms, direct link on others).
  2. Complete the short survey about your experience with the game.
  3. You'll receive a redemption code
  4. Return to the game's Main Menu and select Redeem Code, then enter the code.
  5. The Stud Cache will be added to your Batcave, near the vehicle garage.

The Stud Cache replenishes every time you visit the Batcave. That means you can travel out to Gotham, immediately fast travel back, and open it again. With all the stud multiplier upgrades active, earning around 30,000 studs per opening. It's not the single fastest farming method depending on your fast travel load times, but it's free money on every Batcave visit.

As a bonus, completing the survey also rewards a bouncy castle cosmetic item for the Batcave.

How to farm studs fast in the open world

Smash everything with the Batmobile

One of the quickest ways to build your multiplier and collect studs simultaneously is driving the Batmobile recklessly through Gotham City. The vehicle is large and takes no meaningful damage from collisions with destructible objects, so plowing through alleyways, docks, factories, and streets shreds through breakable items at a pace no on-foot character can match. The stud yield from each object still benefits from your active multiplier upgrades.

Use Batman's Batarangs to clear destructibles at range

When playing as Batman with Batarangs equipped, pressing R2 (PlayStation) or RT (Xbox) triggers an auto-targeting throw that homes in on the nearest destructible objects. This lets you destroy items without closing the distance for melee attacks, which is especially useful for building your multiplier quickly before opening a chest or starting a crime encounter.

Use Jim Gordon's Rebound Launcher

Commissioner Jim Gordon carries a weapon called the Rebound Launcher, which fires bouncy rubber bullets that home in on anything they can damage. In areas dense with destructible objects, a single volley can chain through dozens of items and produce showers of studs. Get the Splitter upgrade for the Rebound Launcher at the Workbench to increase the number of projectiles per shot, and then take Gordon into the open world or compatible missions

Respond to Gotham crime reports

Taking cues from the Batman: Arkham series, the game sends you radio reports of crimes across Gotham City. There's no traditional XP system, but defeating enemies in these encounters rewards studs directly. The environment during crime events often lacks dense destructibles, so keeping your multiplier high is harder here, but even at 1x the rewards are consistent. Treat these as reliable income rather than a primary multiplier-building tool.

What to spend studs on

Studs unlock three main categories of content:

  • Vehicles, including multiple Batmobiles and character-specific rides
  • Suits for Batman, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, and other characters
  • Batcave Props to customize your base

Reaching full completion requires millions of studs, so the farming methods above aren't optional if you want everything. Check our full trophy and achievement list to see exactly which stud-related trophies you're targeting, including "Life's been good to me" (collect 1,000,000 studs), "Never do it for free" (collect 30,000 studs in a single combo), and "I'm good with calculation" (maintain max Stud Combo for 30 seconds).

If you're wondering how long it'll take to unlock everything, our how long to beat guide breaks down the main campaign length versus full 100% completion time.
