RPGs Korean Mobile Gaming

New market analysis reveals that Role-Playing Games dominate South Korea's mobile gaming market, accounting for 60% of total sales. This figure far exceeds global averages and positions South Korea as a unique RPG-focused market with implications for both traditional and web3 game development.

RPGs Korean Mobile Gaming

Between January 1st and August 31st this year, RPGs led global mobile game sales at 25.1 percent, ahead of Strategy at 20.1%, Puzzle at 12.9%, and Casino at 11.8%.

South Korea claimed 13.5% of worldwide mobile RPG sales during that same window, ranking third behind Japan at 34% and China's iOS market at 20.9%. What sets South Korea apart is the concentration: RPGs represented 57.5% of the country's mobile game revenue, dwarfing Japan's 47.8%, China's iOS 27%, and the United States 11.3%.

Tracking South Korean mobile RPG sales from 2019 through 2023 shows MMORPGs still command the largest share at 69.5% in 2023. That's down 9.6% from the 2019 peak of 77%, signaling a shift toward other RPG subgenres rather than a decline in overall RPG interest.

Squad-based RPGs saw a 39% market share increase between 2019 and 2023. Games like Goddess of Victory: Nikke and Cookie Run: Kingdom drove this growth, establishing squad RPGs as the second-largest revenue generator in South Korea's mobile RPG space.

Character collection mechanics have become a major revenue driver in squad RPGs. Goddess of Victory: Nikke recorded a 372% spike in daily sales after introducing the character Modernia. Cookie Run: Kingdom saw a 148% revenue jump on March 9 when new characters Stardust and Alien Donut launched.

Goddess of Victory: Nikke now ranks as South Korea's top squad RPG, breaking into the top 10 RPG charts alongside established MMORPG titles and Honkai: Star Rail.

Idle Games on the Rise

Idle RPGs grew 159% in market share from 1.7% in 2019 to 4.4% in 2023. Legend of Slime: Idle RPG generated $77 million globally and $10 million in South Korea since launching in August 2022. Despite leading idle RPG sales, it placed 36th in overall mobile game charts.

The game's success stems from aggressive advertising placement, accessible onboarding, and a progression system that rewards minimal time investment. In January 2023, it ranked first on ironSource's ad network, second on TikTok, and seventh on Unity.

Relevance to Web3 Gaming

South Korea's RPG-heavy mobile market offers a blueprint for web3 developers targeting mobile platforms. The success of character-driven monetization and low-friction idle mechanics translates directly to blockchain gaming's focus on collectible assets and passive play.

Fableborne from Pixion Games exemplifies this crossover. The play-to-own title blends Action RPG combat with base-building systems, targeting the same player preferences that made squad RPGs and idle games successful in South Korea's mobile market.

Final Thoughts

Squad RPGs and idle games grew through character-focused design and smart user acquisition. Web3 developers can apply these lessons to blockchain-native features like NFT character drops and staking-based idle progression. South Korea's mobile RPG dominance isn't just a regional quirk — it's a preview of what works when players care more about collecting and progressing than about the underlying tech.
