San Diego Comic-Con 2026 is delivering the goods, and buried among Marvel reveals and animated show announcements is a piece of news that co-op shooter fans will want to circle on their calendars immediately. Cold Iron Studios has confirmed that Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 launches on August 25, and that is less than a month away.

The game drops on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games Store, and Steam simultaneously. No staggered launches, no platform exclusivity. Everyone gets it on the same day.

The Specialist class changes how you engage

The biggest new addition revealed at SDCC is the Specialist, a brand new class built around flexibility. Cold Iron Studios' Narrative Designer Jake Kriegman and Art Director Nic Stohlman sat down at the convention to walk through what the Specialist brings to the table, and the pitch is straightforward: it lets you kill Xenomorphs (and more) your way.

Here's the thing, that phrase "and more" is doing real work. The Specialist class sounds designed to handle threats beyond the standard Xenomorph roster, which hints at a wider enemy variety than the original game offered. Cold Iron has not spelled out the full enemy list yet, but the framing suggests the sequel is not just a reskin of the first game's combat loop.

The original Aliens: Fireteam Elite launched in 2021 with five classes at launch. Adding a sixth in the sequel with a distinct identity signals the studio has been paying attention to how players actually want to approach the game's horde-style encounters.

Horde mode makes the return trip worth it

Alongside the Specialist reveal, Cold Iron confirmed a new Horde mode is coming with the sequel. For a game built entirely around cooperative gunfighting against waves of increasingly aggressive enemies, a dedicated Horde mode feels like a natural fit that the first game arguably should have shipped with.

The key here is replayability. Horde modes live or die by how well the base combat holds up under repetition, and if the Specialist class is as flexible as the studio claims, that combination could give squads a genuine reason to keep running matches long after the campaign wraps.

important
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 requires an internet connection for co-op play. Solo play with AI teammates is expected to return based on the original game's structure, but Cold Iron has not detailed offline functionality for the sequel yet.

For fans of shooter games who have been looking for a co-op experience with some real atmosphere behind it, the Aliens license still carries weight. The original game had a solid foundation that the community wanted more from, and August 25 is when they find out if Cold Iron delivered.

What the SDCC timing tells us

Cold Iron chose San Diego Comic-Con to put Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 in front of a massive entertainment audience, which makes sense given the franchise's film roots. The original Aliens film remains one of the defining co-op power fantasies in cinema, and tying the game's promotional push to SDCC keeps it in conversation with the broader sci-fi and horror crowd, not just the core gaming audience.

With less than 30 days between the SDCC announcement and launch, Cold Iron is clearly confident the game is ready. There is no extended preview period, no beta window mentioned, and no delay buffer built in. You will want to keep an eye on any pre-order bonuses or early access windows that surface in the coming weeks.

If you are the kind of player who enjoys co-op shooters with deep build options, the gaming guides hub will be worth bookmarking ahead of launch for loadout breakdowns and class strategies once the game is in players' hands on August 25.
