Darkstone Restoration Demo Lets You Relive Classic Hack-and-Slash Action

Darkstone Restoration is now in early access with a free demo on Steam, bringing back the 1999 hack-and-slash with updated controls, visuals, and eight playable classes.

Darkstone Restoration on GOG.com

There was a time when action RPGs did not need a seasonal battle pass, a rotating shop, or a 300-node skill tree to feel rewarding. You picked a class, walked into a dungeon, and hit things until they stopped moving. Darkstone Restoration is a remaster of that exact era, and its free demo on Steam is a welcome reminder of what the genre looked like before it got complicated.

The original Darkstone launched in 1999, developed by Paul Cuisset, and sat comfortably in the same click-to-kill tradition as early Diablo. It had one genuinely clever trick: a companion system that let you field two characters simultaneously, with the CPU controlling whichever one you were not actively playing. That mechanic made solo runs feel slightly less lonely and added a layer of tactical flexibility that most contemporaries skipped entirely.

What the remaster actually changes

The early access build of Darkstone Restoration does not reinvent the game. That is the point. The changes are quality-of-life improvements that remove friction without altering the feel: WASD movement replaces the old point-and-click-only navigation, full controller support has been added, and the UI has been modernized. Visuals have been updated too, though players with lower-end hardware may want to dial back volumetric fog and procedural grass to keep frame rates stable.

Eight character classes are available, covering the familiar archetypes you would expect from a late-90s action RPG. The demo lets you create characters from any of them and run through three quests pulled from the early-game dungeon pool, with the selection randomized each new run. That random rotation gives the demo genuine replay value rather than the usual "play the first 20 minutes once" structure most demos offer.

tip
The demo is available free on Steam under the listing "DarkStone Restoration Demo" and carries progress separately from the full early access build.

The appeal of action RPGs without the overhead

Here's the thing about games like Darkstone Restoration: they fill a gap that the genre's biggest names have quietly abandoned. Modern action games increasingly demand that players engage with seasonal systems, track patch meta shifts, and plan builds weeks in advance just to stay competitive. Darkstone asks nothing of the sort. You pick a character, you find a dungeon, you fight goblins and skeletons until the quest resolves.

That simplicity is not a flaw. For players who want a break from games that require a spreadsheet to enjoy, it is exactly the right design philosophy. The companion system still holds up as a differentiator too, giving the game a slightly different rhythm compared to pure solo dungeon crawlers.

What is still missing from early access

The current build has one notable gap: online multiplayer is not yet available. Couch co-op works, so local play with two characters is fully functional, but anyone hoping to run dungeons with a friend remotely will need to wait. The developers have also flagged a permadeath mode as a planned addition, which should appeal to players who want more weight behind each run.

Those absences are worth knowing before jumping into the full early access purchase, but they do not affect the demo at all. The demo stands on its own as a clean, functional slice of the game that communicates exactly what Darkstone Restoration is trying to be.

The bigger picture for fans of old-school dungeon crawlers

Darkstone Restoration arrives at a moment when nostalgia for pre-live-service action RPGs is clearly driving player interest. The genre has seen a steady stream of revivals and spiritual successors, and what most players miss is not necessarily the dated interfaces or the lower fidelity graphics. It is the absence of obligation. No daily quests, no expiring seasonal content, no fear of falling behind.

If you have been looking for something to scratch that itch while also keeping an eye on newer action RPG releases like Alabaster Dawn, a game with its own take on fast-paced combat systems, the Darkstone Restoration demo is worth an hour of your time. For players newer to the genre who want to build a foundation before jumping into more complex systems, the Alabaster Dawn beginner guide covering combat, weapons, and first steps is a solid starting point. The demo is free, the quests randomize on each run, and the full early access build is already available on Steam for those who want to go deeper into the dungeon right now.
