Another date, another delay
If you had February 2028 on your bingo card for The Batman 2, congratulations. Matt Reeves' long-awaited sequel has been pushed back again, now landing in cinemas on February 18, 2028, roughly six years after the original film. The new date comes after a string of schedule shifts that started way back when the film was first slotted for October 3, 2025.
Here's the full timeline of pain for anyone keeping score:
- Original date: October 3, 2025
- First shift: October 2, 2026
- Second shift: October 7, 2027
- Current date: February 18, 2028
That is three delays across three separate years. At this point, Batman fans have spent more time waiting for the sequel than it took to make the original.
The camera test that made the wait sting less
To be fair to Reeves, he did not leave fans completely empty-handed. Alongside the date news, he dropped a camera test on Vimeo that functions as the first real look at the sequel. Robert Pattinson appears in full Batman costume, staring directly into the camera against a snowy backdrop, and it looks exactly as moody and atmospheric as fans of the first film would want.
The snow detail is significant. Rumors had been circulating for months that the sequel would be set during winter, and this confirms the visual direction Reeves is going for. Gotham in the cold and dark suits this version of the character perfectly.
A cast that keeps getting more interesting
The delay news arrived alongside some genuinely intriguing casting chatter. The Batman 2 has added Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Charles Dance to its roster, though none of their roles have been officially confirmed.
Here's the lowdown on where speculation currently sits:
- Sebastian Stan recently shaved his head, sending DC fans into a spiral. The leading theory is that he could be playing serial killer Victor Zsasz, a character who fits the grounded, noir tone Reeves established in the first film.
- Scarlett Johansson is rumored to be joining as Poison Ivy, with some fans pointing to a co-writer tease from over a year ago as early foreshadowing.
- Charles Dance remains the biggest mystery of the three.
None of this is confirmed, but the casting choices alone suggest Reeves is building toward something with real scope.
What this means for the broader DC picture
The Batman 2 exists in its own corner of DC, separate from the James Gunn and Peter Safran DCU reboot. That separation has always been one of its strengths. Pattinson's Bruce Wayne does not need to connect to anything else, which gives Reeves total creative freedom, even if that freedom apparently requires more time than anyone originally planned.
Meanwhile, Gunn's own Batman project, The Brave and the Bold directed by Andy Muschietti, is also in development as part of the main DCU continuity. DC fans are essentially getting two distinct takes on the character across the next few years.
The Batman franchise's gaming presence is equally active right now. Fortnite is bringing the Dark Knight back to the island with the Batman Sprite skin dropping July 16, and if you want to scratch that Gotham itch while waiting for 2028, the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight before you buy guide breaks down everything worth knowing about TT Games' latest take on the character.
The wait continues, but the signs are good
Three delays is a lot. There is no spinning that. But the camera test footage suggests Reeves knows exactly what he wants this film to be, and Pattinson's commitment to the role has never been in question. The winter setting, the expanded cast, and the deliberately slow rollout of information all point to a director who is taking his time for a reason.
