GTA 5 launched over a decade ago, and its PC mod scene is somehow still growing. While Rockstar has kept single-player DLC firmly off the table, the modding community has spent years filling that gap with content that often rivals what the studio ships officially. Right now, there are 28 mods worth your time, and several of them are genuinely impressive.
What the base game was missing
Here's the thing: GTA 5 in its vanilla state has always had friction points that modders noticed immediately. The wanted system caps at five stars. Carjacking is a single button press with no skill involved. The police AI is predictable. Vehicles handle with a certain floatiness that the game never fully addressed. None of these are dealbreakers, but stacked together, they make the world feel a little thin after a few hundred hours.
The mod scene has been chipping away at all of it. The Lockpicking and Hotwiring mod by ViceCityVigilante turns vehicle theft into an actual minigame, forcing you to act fast on a locked car instead of just tapping a button and driving off. CarControl V from MNHC goes further, letting you open individual doors, shift between seats, and kill the engine manually. Small changes, but they make Los Santos feel less like a theme park.
The Policing Overhaul vehicle pack, built by 11john11 and his community over three years of development, adds custom LSPD models including new cars, trucks, and helicopters that blend convincingly with the existing fleet. Three years is a long time to spend on a free mod.
The single-player DLC Rockstar never made
The biggest gap in GTA 5 has always been the absence of story mode expansions. Rockstar funneled everything into GTA Online, and single-player players were left with the original three-character campaign and nothing else.
Modder HKH191 has done more to fix this than anyone. The Contract in SP mod ports the entire Dr. Dre VIP questline from GTA Online into the main game, complete with 13 missions featuring voice lines from Franklin, Lamar, and Dr. Dre himself. The Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid mod does the same for the Online raid, triggering via a phone call from Vincent before sending you after a cartel operation. Both mods are as close to official story DLC as the community has produced.
Single Player Heists is now out of beta and includes 18 full heists playable solo. There are bugs, but 18 heists is a substantial amount of content for a free download.
danger
Many of these mods require Script Hook V to run. Install it before anything else, and keep a separate GTA 5 folder if you switch between modded single-player and GTA Online. Rockstar's anti-cheat will flag memory hooks and ban your account.Mods that change how the game feels
Some of the best additions here are not about content volume. They are about texture.
Chaos Response turns the police system into something resembling its own game, with over 10 distinct crime types ranging from gang drive-bys to UFO sightings, each requiring a different approach. Six Stars restores the army response that older GTA games had at maximum wanted level, with a base version using stock models and an ultimate version that pulls in custom army vehicles. Gang and Turf lifts the territory system directly from GTA San Andreas and drops it into Los Santos, letting you build and control a gang across the city.
On the quieter end, Fuel Script V adds a working fuel gauge to your HUD and a functional interior gauge, which sounds minor until you are six cops deep into a chase and the engine cuts out. Better Deformation makes vehicle crash physics feel genuinely destructive rather than cosmetic. Dynamic Traffic Colors adds variety to NPC vehicle spawns, including liveries and decals, with an optional non-realistic mode for anyone who wants Los Santos looking like a fever dream.
Shootdodge: The Sequel from mbahdokek adds a bullet meter HUD and slow-motion dive mechanics pulled straight from Max Payne, including new sound effects and dual wield support. It is exactly what it sounds like, and it works.
Tools for creators and completionists
The Scene Director mod expands Rockstar's built-in Director Mode with a new toolset for video creators, and pairs well with the Updated Animations List mod from Nerax for additional effects. CoordSaver from harshil logs your X, Y, and Z coordinates for scene recreation, which sounds niche until you are trying to match a camera angle from three sessions ago.
For anyone who just wants to skip the replay, the 100% Save mod on Nexus Mods gives you complete story progress across Michael, Franklin, and Trevor without sitting through the campaign again.
With GTA 6 still targeting a 2026 release window, the GTA 5 mod community shows no signs of slowing down. If anything, the pace of new releases suggests modders are treating this as their last big run before attention shifts.
