Someone at Kojima Productions or Steam had a very bad Tuesday. A complete, playable pre-release build of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach leaked online two days before its official PC launch, and it's already circulating on piracy sites.
According to reports from piracy-focused communities, the leak originated directly from Steam. During the standard preload process, unencrypted versions of the game files were apparently made available by mistake, rather than the locked-down encrypted packages players normally receive when preloading. Nobody knows exactly how long the window was open, but it was long enough. The full 113GB game was downloaded in its entirety before the error was caught.
How a Preload Became a Full Leak
Here's the thing about Steam's DRM situation: it's not exactly Fort Knox on its own. Death Stranding 2 doesn't use Denuvo, the anti-tamper software that typically makes cracking newly released PC games a lengthy process. Steam's built-in DRM is comparatively easy to bypass, which means that once those unencrypted files were out, there was essentially nothing stopping people from running the game.
The result? Pirates are already playing Death Stranding 2 on PC while legitimate preloaders are still staring at a locked countdown timer.
One notable detail flagged in piracy communities is that the leaked build is missing Russian voiceovers. Steam handles language packs as separate downloadable packages, so it's possible the Russian audio simply wasn't bundled into the build that got out. For everyone else, the game appears to be fully playable.
What Pirates Are Missing Out On
Anyone running the leaked build is cut off from one of the game's most interesting systems. Death Stranding 2 carries forward the asynchronous online infrastructure from the original, where players share constructed roads, bridges, and other structures across a shared world. That entire layer of the experience is locked behind a legitimate copy and an online connection.
danger
Pirates playing the leaked build will have no access to the shared online infrastructure features, which are a core part of the Death Stranding experience.
It's a meaningful chunk of what makes the series distinct. The social strand system isn't optional window dressing , it's woven into how the game is designed to be played.

The Official Launch Is Hours Away

For anyone who preordered legitimately, the wait is almost over. The leaked build might be out there, but the full experience, online infrastructure and all, is only a few hours away from being available the right way. Make sure to check out more:
