The Slayer is heading back into the dark. Bethesda Softworks and id Software used the Xbox Games Showcase to finally pull back the curtain on the expansion that Premium Edition owners have been waiting for since launch day: Revelations, the first major DLC for DOOM: The Dark Ages.

Chain Spear weapon reveal
What Revelations is actually about
The official story description sets the tone immediately: the Slayer is "wounded and betrayed" and thrown into a purgatory he can only escape by confronting some hard truths and forging new strength alongside a mysterious ally. The goal is to fight free from a prison of the mind and defeat an abomination of the gods to put his followers on the path to freedom.
That framing keeps things deliberately vague, but the base game left the door wide open for a follow-up. The pattern from Doom Eternal's Ancient Gods DLC suggests Revelations will pick up directly after the main campaign's ending, potentially threading the story closer to the events of Doom 2016.
The Chain Spear and what it means for combat
Here's the thing: the most interesting detail in the whole announcement is the new weapon. The Chain Spear is described as offering "new dimensions to combat" with a system that rewards mastery through a combination of power and mobility. That language is doing a lot of work.
Doom: The Dark Ages built its combat around parrying and shield-blocking, a more grounded and deliberate rhythm than its predecessor. The Chain Spear sounds like it injects some of Doom Eternal's frenetic, movement-based energy back into the mix. Whether that clicks with the base game's pacing or creates a satisfying contrast is the real question, and one players won't be able to answer until July 7.
Revelations also promises new demons, additional levels to tear through, and what the official description calls "deeper puzzles." Puzzle depth in a Doom game is always a curious pitch, but id Software has earned some benefit of the doubt.
Players who don't own the Premium Edition can purchase Revelations separately for $19.99. The game is also available on Game Pass (Ultimate, Premium, and PC tiers).
Ripatorium 3.0 drops free for everyone
The paid DLC isn't the only thing landing on July 7. Every DOOM: The Dark Ages player gets the Ripatorium 3.0 update at no cost, and it's a meaningful one for fans of the game's customisable arena mode.
The update brings deeper customisation options, improved pass code generation, and personal preset saving to the Ripatorium. That last feature especially matters for players who have built specific challenge setups they want to return to without rebuilding from scratch every session.
Players who also own Revelations get an extra layer on top: three new maps, additional demons to fight in the arena, and fully upgraded versions of the new weapons to use in the sandbox. It's a smart way to make the DLC feel connected to the game's ongoing replayability rather than just a one-and-done story chapter.
