EA Acquisition To Be Cleared Soon

The European Commission has formally cleared the proposed $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts by a Saudi-led investor group, concluding the transaction "would not raise competition concerns" under EU merger rules. The decision marks a significant regulatory milestone for one of the most scrutinized deals in gaming history.

What the EU actually decided

The Commission's conclusion is fairly direct: the deal was reviewed under the normal merger procedure, and regulators found its impact on competition in video game markets to be limited. The formal approval covers EA's full portfolio, including its mobile, PC, and console publishing operations, as well as its esports event organization and commercialization activities.

The specific breakdown of ownership following the deal is notable. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) will hold 93.7% of shares, making it the dominant owner by a wide margin. Silver Lake, the US private equity firm, takes 5.5%, while Affinity Partners, the investment firm run by Jared Kushner, picks up the remaining 1.1%.

Here's the thing: the EU's sign-off doesn't mean the deal is done globally. Regulatory approvals are required across multiple jurisdictions, and the Commission's green light is just one checkpoint on a longer road.

The franchises caught in the middle

For players, the stakes are real. EA's catalog spans some of the biggest franchises in gaming. Battlefield, The Sims, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and the entire EA Sports lineup, including EA Sports FC 26, all fall under the umbrella of whatever ownership structure emerges from this deal.

If you're currently deep in EA Sports FC 26's Ultimate Team mode, the FC 26 Squad Building Challenges guide covers everything you need to maximize rewards while the game's future ownership is still being sorted out. The day-to-day experience isn't changing yet, but who signs the checks at the top certainly will.

The EU approval does not finalize the acquisition. Additional regulatory reviews in other jurisdictions are still ongoing before the deal can close.

Why the community isn't celebrating

The regulatory clearance hasn't exactly landed warmly with players and creators. Earlier this year, several prominent The Sims content creators exited EA's Creator Network, citing ethical concerns about the PIF's track record. Saudi Arabian authorities have faced persistent accusations of human rights violations, and for a portion of EA's community, the identity of who owns their favorite franchises matters.

What most players miss in deals like this is the long-term question: private ownership under a sovereign wealth fund operates very differently from a publicly traded company. Accountability structures change, the pressure to report quarterly results disappears, and strategic decisions can shift in ways that aren't immediately visible to the people playing the games.

The key here is that EA's day-to-day operations aren't expected to change overnight. But the creative direction of franchises like Dragon Age, which former lead David Gaider has already described as "unlikely" to continue at EA, raises real questions about what a post-acquisition EA prioritizes.

What comes next for EA's games

The EU approval is one piece of a larger regulatory puzzle. Until all required clearances are secured globally, the deal remains in progress. Players can expect the current slate of EA titles to continue operating normally in the meantime.

For EA Sports FC 26 specifically, the EA FC 26 World's Game Update brought 53 national teams and a 48-team tournament mode to the game, and that content isn't going anywhere regardless of who owns the company. The games keep running; the corporate structure is what's in flux.

Regulatory decisions from other major markets will be the next thing to watch. The EU's clearance sets a precedent, but it doesn't guarantee a smooth path everywhere else.
