Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 now has a name, a date, and a full roster. Epic Games dropped the official trailer for Override on August 17, confirming what weeks of leaks and social media teases had been pointing toward: the next season is a full-on gaming legends celebration, and the character list is longer than most people expected.
The season kicks off on August 20.
Every new character confirmed for Override
The official trailer and accompanying artwork lock in 12 characters making their Fortnite debut:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Tails
- Dr. Eggman
- Shadow
- Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
- Joker (Persona)
- Crash Bandicoot
- Spyro the Dragon
- Mega Man
- Rush (Mega Man)
- Pac-Man
- Tetris
That last one is worth a double-take. Tetris, as in the block-stacking puzzle game with no protagonist, is somehow confirmed as part of the Override roster. How Epic Games turns falling tetrominoes into a playable skin or in-game element is genuinely one of the more interesting questions heading into launch.
The Sonic side of the crossover is the most stacked, with four characters from Sega's franchise arriving together. Epic had already teased Sonic specifically with a nine-second clip last week, so that one was expected. The rest of the roster, particularly Sora and Joker, had been circulating in leaks for weeks before today's confirmation.
What this means for players heading into August 20
Here's the thing: Fortnite has been building toward this kind of season for years. The game already has its own Gaming Legends Series rarity tier, dedicated entirely to skins and cosmetics from other video game IPs. Nearly 70 characters from outside franchises have already appeared, including Ryu and Blanka from Street Fighter, Master Chief from Halo, Geralt from The Witcher, Lara Croft, and characters from Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Doom, and Cyberpunk 2077.
Override takes that existing foundation and makes it the entire season's identity rather than a side feature. The promo art also places several of those returning characters alongside the newcomers, suggesting they will have a visible role in the season's narrative or events.
What most players miss with these crossover seasons is the gap between what gets announced and what actually lands in the Battle Pass versus the shop. A roster this size almost certainly means most of these characters will be shop purchases spread across the season rather than free Battle Pass rewards. If you are planning to grab multiple skins, it is worth getting your Fortnite FPS and settings dialed in before launch day so performance is not the reason you miss a fight.
A season built for gaming nostalgia
The Override lineup reads like a list assembled specifically to hit as many gaming generations as possible. Pac-Man and Mega Man represent the arcade and NES eras. Crash and Spyro defined the PlayStation 1 era for millions of players. Sora and Joker cover two of the most beloved JRPG franchises of the last two decades. Sonic spans all of them.
Epic has been signaling this direction for a while. The tagline attached to last week's Sonic tease, "break the rules, change the game," fits a season framed around characters who each defined their own era of gaming history.
For players jumping into Override from day one, the Chapter 7 Week 1 quests guide will be the fastest way to start banking XP and working toward whatever Battle Pass rewards Epic has lined up for the season's opening week.
