Epic Games and Google have officially resolved their years-long legal dispute, jointly filing a settlement proposal with the US District Court that will bring Fortnite back to the Google Play Store globally.
The Settlement and What It Means for Players
The conflict started in 2020 when Fortnite disappeared from Google's storefront following a showdown over in-app payment requirements. After months of signals pointing toward reconciliation in late 2025, the companies have made the agreement official.
Epic announced on its website that the company "will be investing robustly in serving developers and gamers with the Epic Games Store for Android, and will also be bringing Fortnite back to the Google Play Store worldwide."
Tim Sweeney, Epic's founder, posted on social media that Fortnite will return to Google Play Store "soon" and that "installation on Android will become much easier later in 2026."
Google's Third-Party Billing Rollout
The lawsuit centered on Google's requirement that all in-app transactions go through Google Play Billing, blocking alternative payment methods. Under the settlement terms, Google will now permit third-party billing systems. The rollout schedule varies by region:
Players and developers in different territories will get access to alternative payment options on different timelines, with worldwide availability not hitting until late 2027.
A Long Road Back to Android
The clash between Epic and Google (plus a separate fight with Apple) kicked off in 2020 after Epic intentionally circumvented platform payment systems in Fortnite, leading to removal from both the App Store and Google Play. The Apple case has followed its own path, but the Google conflict is now closed.
While Fortnite was absent from Google Play, Android players could still download it by sideloading through the Epic Games website, a process that required more steps than a typical app store installation. Sweeney's mention of installation becoming "much easier later in 2026" indicates Epic is working to streamline that experience alongside the Google Play relaunch.
This settlement matters beyond Fortnite. If Google delivers on its third-party billing promises, it could reshape how monetization works across the entire Android platform for developers.
Epic has also confirmed bigger mobile plans, stating the Epic Games Store for Android will keep running alongside Windows and Mac versions, establishing the company as a legitimate cross-platform storefront.

When will Fortnite be back on Google Play Store?
Tim Sweeney said the return is coming "soon," but there's no specific date yet. He also mentioned that Android installation will get easier later in 2026.
Why was Fortnite removed from Google Play in the first place?
Epic deliberately bypassed Google Play's payment system in Fortnite in 2020, breaking platform rules. Google pulled the game, triggering a legal fight that lasted until the 2025 settlement.
Can Android players still access Fortnite right now?
Yes. Fortnite has stayed available on Android through sideloading from the Epic Games website, though it takes more steps than a standard app store download.
Will Google allow third-party payments for all developers?
Google has agreed to roll out third-party billing support under the settlement, but the schedule depends on region. Full global coverage won't arrive until September 30, 2027.
