Insomniac Confirms Marvel's Wolverine Has Only One Playable Character

If you've been quietly dreading another round of forced stealth sections as a side character, breathe easy. Marvel's Wolverine will have exactly one playable character: Logan himself. Jess Reiner-Reed, senior project director, and Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac Games, made it explicit in a recent interview: "Wolverine is our only playable character."

That's about as clear as it gets.

The Spider-Man 2 MJ problem, and why it matters here

Here's the thing: this confirmation didn't come out of nowhere. Recent footage of Marvel's Wolverine featured Jean Grey prominently enough that players started connecting dots they probably didn't want to connect. The memory of Spider-Man 2's MJ stealth sections is apparently still fresh for a lot of people, and for good reason. Watching an untrained reporter somehow neutralize trained soldiers with ease was one of the most jarring tonal breaks in a PS5 exclusive.

Insomniac clearly heard that feedback. The devs addressed it directly, and the message is that Marvel's Wolverine won't repeat that mistake.

What Jean Grey and the other characters actually do

Jean Grey's role in the game is story-driven, not mechanical. She appears in cutscenes and narrative beats, but you won't swap into her perspective mid-mission.

The same goes for Sabretooth and Mystique, who will apparently make appearances during combat. The devs described them as dynamically joining your combos for team-up moves against enemies. Think brief assist animations rather than full character control. It's a way to weave the broader X-Men world into the action without pulling you out of Logan's perspective.

The key here is that Insomniac is using these characters to add flavor to combat without fragmenting the experience. You stay in Wolverine's skin from start to finish.

important
The game carries a mature ESRB rating with content including severed limbs. This is not a game built for younger audiences, and the single-character focus seems to reflect that intentional, grounded tone.

A PS5 exclusive built around one brutal perspective

The decision to lock the experience to Logan connects directly to what kind of game Insomniac is building. Marvel's Wolverine runs at 60 FPS on base PS5, and the studio has been deliberate about framing this as a focused, character-driven action game rather than an ensemble piece. A single playable character makes the design cleaner. Every ability, every upgrade, every combat scenario is built around one set of tools.

That focus is what makes the confirmed approach feel right. Wolverine's appeal has always been about inhabiting that specific fantasy: the berserker rage, the regeneration, the claws. Splitting that across multiple characters would dilute exactly what makes the premise work.

What this means for how the game plays

For players curious about structure, the game is confirmed as a linear action experience rather than an open-world sandbox. If you want more detail on how exploration and missions are structured around a single protagonist, the Marvel's Wolverine open world guide breaks down what Insomniac has confirmed about the game's layout.

With the release approaching and details continuing to surface, the Marvel's Wolverine guides collection is the place to track everything as it lands.
