Henry Cavill is taking his Warhammer obsession to a whole new level. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Warhammer 40,000 animated event series, with Cavill attached as executive producer alongside the live-action Warhammer 40,000 series he is already developing at the same studio.

From Secret Level spinoff to full series

The project grows directly out of "Secret Level," Amazon's animated anthology that debuted in late 2024. That show featured a Warhammer 40,000 episode that landed hard with fans, and now it is getting the full series treatment. Blur Studios, which produced "Secret Level," is back on board, as is Games Workshop, the tabletop giant behind the original miniature wargame.

Here's the thing: this is not just a cash-grab extension. Dave Wilson, who directed the Warhammer 40,000 episode of "Secret Level" and served as the show's supervising director, is returning as co-creator and director of the new series. Wilson has wanted to tell a long-form story in the Warhammer 40,000 universe for more than 20 years, and the response to that single episode gave him the runway to do it.

The Deathwatch are the focus

Plot details are locked down tight, but one key detail has been confirmed: the series will center on The Deathwatch, an elite faction of Space Marines whose entire purpose is hunting alien threats. For anyone who has spent time in the tabletop hobby or the video games, the Deathwatch represent some of the most tactically specific and lore-rich units in the entire 40K universe. That is a strong creative choice, not just a generic "Space Marines shoot things" premise.

tip
The Deathwatch are drawn from multiple Space Marine chapters and operate as a specialist kill team, making them a natural fit for episodic storytelling with varied characters.

Who is behind the camera

The creative team here has genuine weight. Wilson is developing the series alongside John Orloff, a writer with credits on "Band of Brothers" and "Masters of the Air." That pairing signals Amazon is treating this as prestige animation, not a quick tie-in.

The executive producer lineup is stacked: Tim Miller, creator of "Secret Level," produces alongside Wilson for Blur Studios. Cavill is joined by Natalie Viscuso as fellow executive producer. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Andy Smillie from Games Workshop round out the producing team. The key here is that Games Workshop has direct representation in the room, which matters enormously for a franchise with a fanbase this protective of its lore.

Amazon's game IP push keeps accelerating

This announcement fits a clear pattern. Amazon currently airs the Fallout series adaptation on Prime Video, has a Tomb Raider live-action show in production starring Sophie Turner, and is developing a live-action God of War series (currently recasting the lead following an on-set injury). A Life Is Strange series recently began production, and Mass Effect and Wolfenstein adaptations are in the pipeline.

The Warhammer 40,000 animated series sits at the center of that strategy, with both an animated and a live-action version developing in parallel. What most players miss is that this dual-track approach is unusual even by Amazon's standards. It suggests the studio sees genuine franchise potential here, not just a single adaptation bet.

For Warhammer fans who have been waiting years for the IP to get serious screen treatment, the combination of Cavill's genuine passion for the hobby, Wilson's two-decade investment in the universe, and Games Workshop's direct involvement is about as reassuring a creative setup as you could ask for. Keep an eye on how the live-action version develops alongside this one. If the animated series lands, it could reshape how Amazon positions the entire Warhammer property.
