Fan-built Lego Final Fantasy 7 Midgar set is stunning the community

A fan-designed Lego Final Fantasy 7 Midgar diorama has hit Lego Ideas with over 1,000 votes in days, and the community is desperate for it to become an official kit.

I made a diorama of Midgar, from Final Fantasy VII : r/lego

Somewhere between the Sector 5 slums and the Shinra tower, a fan just built one of the most impressive gaming dioramas the Lego community has seen in years. Creator hachiroku24 has submitted a custom Final Fantasy 7 Midgar model to Lego Ideas under the name "Midgar, City of Mako," and the response has been immediate. The build racked up over 1,009 votes in just a few days, with the most common reaction across social platforms being some variation of: "how do I make this myself?"

The Final Fantasy franchise has always had a passionate collector base, and fans of Final Fantasy X know better than most how deep that attachment to these worlds runs. Tidus and Yuna's Spira may not be made of bricks, but the appetite for physical representations of these universes is very real.

What hachiroku24 actually built

The model is split into two sections, both based on sectors 5, 6, and 7 of Midgar. The upper section represents the elevated platforms controlled by the Shinra Electric Company, while the lower half depicts the slums where Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, and Barret spend much of the early game.

Here's the thing: the detail level is what separates this from a generic brick build. hachiroku24 specifically recreated the park where Cloud and Aerith share a moment before heading back to Sector 7, the chocobo carriage on the way to the Wall Market (which is also present in the build), and the Midgar Expressway rendered using a forced perspective technique. That last detail is the creator's own stated favorite part of the project, and it shows.

The minifigure lineup is equally thorough: Sephiroth looms over the entire set from above, joined by Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Barret, Yuffie, Wedge, Biggs, Jessie, Chocobo Sam, and a Shinra officer. That is essentially the full Midgar-era cast in plastic form.

How Lego Ideas actually works

Lego Ideas is the platform where community-submitted designs compete for a shot at becoming official retail sets. The path from fan project to store shelf requires a design to hit 10,000 supporter votes, at which point it enters a review shortlist judged by Lego's own team. Reaching that threshold is no guarantee of production, but it is the only real route for fan designs to go official.

important
Reaching 10,000 votes on Lego Ideas puts a design into review consideration, but Lego's internal team makes the final call on which projects move forward to production.

The program has a real track record. The Lego Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set (21331) came directly from Ideas, as did the Nightmare Before Christmas kit. Both proved that gaming and pop culture crossovers can perform well once they get the official stamp. A Final Fantasy 7 Midgar set, given the franchise's global fanbase and the renewed interest around the Remake trilogy, seems like a reasonable candidate.

What most players miss is that the vote count is only step one. Lego also weighs factors like licensing complexity, build feasibility at scale, and retail price viability. A two-section diorama of this size would likely come in at a premium price point if produced commercially.

The community reaction tells its own story

The Reddit thread for the build has been flooded with requests for instructions, which hachiroku24 has not yet released. That reaction says more about the quality of the work than any vote count. When people want to replicate something from scratch, it means the design reads as both achievable and worth the effort.

Final Fantasy 7 has no official Lego presence right now, which makes the gap feel obvious. Square Enix has been active with physical merchandise tied to the Remake series, and Lego has shown it can secure gaming licenses when the conditions are right. The question is whether enough of the community rallies behind this specific submission.

If you want to support the design, the Lego Ideas page is live and taking votes. Whether you are deep into the Remake trilogy or still have memories of the original 1997 PlayStation release, this one is worth a look. For more on the franchise, check out the Final Fantasy X strategy guides or browse the broader gaming guides collection while you wait to see if Midgar gets the brick treatment it deserves.
