New Foundations Beginner Box

Two of Magic: The Gathering's most beginner-friendly products just got cheaper on Amazon, and the timing makes sense given how many new players the game's Universes Beyond crossovers have pulled in over the past year.

According to a report from Polygon covering the current MTG beginner deals, both the Avatar: The Last Airbender Beginner Box and the Foundations Starter Collection are seeing price cuts at Amazon right now. If you've been on the fence about picking up the 33-year-old TCG, this is a pretty reasonable moment to jump in.

What the Avatar Beginner Box actually gets you

The Avatar Beginner Box is built for people who have genuinely never touched a card before. It comes with two mini decks designed around Aang and Zuko, structured so that you play through a guided tutorial game pitting them against each other. Once you've got the basics down, you can swap in the themed decks included in the box and start experimenting with different color combinations.

That tutorial structure is what most beginner products skip. Here's the thing: learning Magic by getting handed a full deck and told to figure it out is a frustrating experience. The Avatar box sidesteps that by giving you a clear starting point with two characters most people already know.

The box is currently 23% off at Amazon, dropping from $34.99 to $26.99.

What the Foundations Starter Collection is for

The Foundations Starter Collection is a different kind of product. Wizards of the Coast designed it to feel like inheriting a shoebox of cards, which is honestly one of the better descriptions of how many people actually got into Magic before the era of structured beginner sets. It contains 387 cards total, along with three Play Boosters.

None of those cards are particularly high-value, but that's not really the point. The key here is that 387 cards gives you enough material to actually start building decks, and the box includes guidance to help you do that. It also includes format staples like Arcane Signet, making it a legitimate starting point for anyone interested in Commander, the game's most popular casual format. A 100-card Commander deck requires some bulk, and this gets you there faster than buying packs blind.

The Foundations Starter Collection is currently $5 off, sitting at $54.71.

Which one makes more sense to buy

These two products serve different points on the learning curve, so the choice depends entirely on where you're starting.

The Avatar box is the better pick if someone in your group needs to learn from scratch. The Foundations collection is more useful once you understand the rules and want to start making actual deck decisions.

Worth noting: Wizards of the Coast has another Beginner Box arriving with the Marvel set in June, so the format isn't going anywhere. But the Avatar box specifically has a built-in appeal for fans of the show that the Marvel version won't replicate.
