There is nothing like Marathon's Cryo Archive map | PC Gamer

If you've been waiting for a reason to jump back into Marathon without immediately getting dunked on by other players, today is your day. Bungie's Season 2 mid-season update is live, and it brings Vault Breaker, the game's first PvE mode, to the Cryo Archive map.

What Vault Breaker actually is

Vault Breaker is not a permanent addition, and it's not a simple PvE toggle layered over the existing maps. It's a standalone, time-limited roguelite mode that runs until August 4, giving players roughly two weeks to get their runs in.

The mode takes place exclusively on the Cryo Archive map and supports solo play, duos, and trios. Runner level doesn't matter here, so anyone can drop in regardless of how much time they've put into the game.

The loop is straightforward: raid Vaults, fight UESC enemies, and decide when to extract before things get too hot. Vaults scale in difficulty over time, so the longer you push, the harder it gets. That tension between greed and survival is very much the point.

How the currency and progression work

Here's the thing about Vault Breaker's economy: it's entirely self-contained. Player-built loadouts are not supported. Instead, you pick from a Sponsored Kit each time you enter, and you upgrade that kit using Vault Data, the mode's dedicated currency.

Everything you extract with, minus event currency and rewards, converts back into Vault Data. The more you invest in your Sponsored Kit over time, the stronger your starting position becomes in future runs. Think of it as a meta-progression layer sitting on top of the individual run structure.

One small incentive for newer players: killing a UESC Commander during a run awards Tier One Vault Data even if you fail to extract. You won't walk away empty-handed just because a run went sideways.

Gear acquired in Vault Breaker cannot be taken into normal game modes directly. The only crossover is through the Vault Breaker Armory, where Vault Data can be spent on items usable outside the mode.

The bigger PvE picture

Vault Breaker is explicitly described by Bungie as experimental. It's a proof of concept as much as it is a content drop, and the studio has been clear that a full, permanent PvE mode is planned for Season 3. How deeply integrated that mode will be with the rest of the game is still unconfirmed.

This context matters. Marathon has had a rough few months since launch. Bungie was hit with significant layoffs that affected both the Destiny and Marathon teams, and last Friday, Marathon director Joe Ziegler departed the studio just four months after the game went live. That's a lot of turbulence for a game still finding its footing.

Vault Breaker landing today is Bungie signaling that development is moving forward regardless. Whether the mode lands well with the community will likely shape how aggressively the studio commits to PvE content going into Season 3.
