Three console generations later, Super Mario Galaxy is back in the spotlight, and Nintendo wants you to pay $500 for the privilege.
On April 6, Nintendo issued an official press release announcing a limited-time Super Mario Galaxy Switch 2 bundle running from April 12 through May 9. Buy a Switch 2 alongside the physical or digital version of Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 at the same time, and you'll save $20. The console sits at $450 normally, the game at $70, so this bundle lands at $500 total. Participating retailers include Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart.
The math here is not exactly flattering
Here's the thing: $20 off is $20 off. But context matters. These are remastered versions of games that originally launched on the Wii in 2007 and 2010. The previous Switch 2 launch bundle paired the console with Mario Kart World, an $80 new release, and hit the same $500 price point. That deal is now sold out after GameStop confirmed it was being phased out.
So the current offer gives you less game for the same money. Mario Kart World was a brand-new title built for Switch 2. Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are remasters of games from three console generations ago, regardless of how good they still play.
A Bluesky post from user @tronknotts summed up the mood pretty cleanly: "Promoting your 2025 console with games from 2010 is so 2026."
Why Nintendo is probably not going to do better than this
The broader context here makes the bundle easier to stomach, even if it's hard to celebrate. Analysts and former Nintendo employees have already flagged that a Switch 2 price increase is likely coming, driven by AI-related RAM shortages, ongoing trade pressures, and rising fuel costs.
danger
Even at $500, the Switch 2 remains cheaper than the current entry-level PS5 following Sony's recent price hikes. That gap may not last.
The key here is that Nintendo is navigating a genuinely difficult hardware cost environment. A $20 discount on a decades-old remaster is not generosity, but it may represent the ceiling of what the company is willing to offer right now. If projections hold and prices keep climbing, a $600 bundle with another legacy title could be the reality by the end of the year.
What players actually get for $500
To be fair to the games themselves, Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel are still among the best platformers Nintendo has ever made. The development history of the Super Mario Galaxy series reflects how much care went into building those original titles. The remasters hold up.
Here's a quick breakdown of the bundle versus the previous offer:
Same price, different value proposition. You'll want to factor in whether you already own the Switch Online version of the original Galaxy games before committing.
The bundle runs through May 9, which lines up with what sources suggest is tied to the theatrical release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel. Nintendo is clearly leaning into the cultural momentum around the franchise, even if the discount itself is modest.
