"TRUE FINAL RELEASE DATE!!" That's how Yacht Club Games announced the news on Bluesky, and honestly, the all-caps energy is completely earned. Mina the Hollower is launching on May 29 for $19.99, ending a wait that stretches back to the game's Kickstarter campaign in 2022, which pulled in over $1 million from backers who saw something special in a whip-cracking mouse navigating a cursed Victorian Gothic island.

From Kickstarter darling to six years in the making

The project was announced as a love letter to Game Boy Color adventure games, drawing clear influence from top-down Zelda titles, Castlevania, and the moody atmosphere of Hollow Knight. Yacht Club Games described it as "our most ambitious game ever" earlier this year, pointing to a "massive, densely interconnected world" built over more than 6 years of development.

The scope is genuinely large. Players can expect to fight more than 25 bosses and mini-bosses, collect 60 Trinkets, upgrade weapons, work through a full level-up system, and take on New Game Plus after the credits roll. Hundreds of gameplay modifiers round out what sounds like a dense, replayable package, all sitting under that $19.99 price point.

The stakes for Yacht Club Games

Here's the thing: this release carries real weight for the studio. Shovel Knight, the 2014 platformer that put Yacht Club Games on the map, never translated into a franchise that kept momentum going. The spinoff games that followed didn't land with the same force, and co-founder Sean Velasco said plainly in 2025 that Mina the Hollower was "make-or-break for sure" for the studio.

Creator Alex Faulkner called the game "just cursed" in a separate statement, which tracks with its development history. The game was originally targeting a Halloween 2025 release before the team made the call to delay it and apply what they described as "final polish." That decision pushed the launch nearly a year, and the pressure to deliver something that justifies the wait is obvious.

What players are actually getting

Mina herself is a "Hollower," tasked with protecting what remains of a decaying Victorian Gothic island while battling its supernatural inhabitants using a whip as her primary weapon. The top-down combat and dungeon structure put it firmly in adventure games territory, though the level-up system and boss density push it closer to action-RPG.

The key here is that $19.99 price. For a game of this described scale, that's a deliberate positioning move. Yacht Club Games knows its audience, and pricing below the typical indie premium tier removes one more barrier between curious players and an actual purchase.

With the launch less than a month away, you'll want to check out the Mina the Hollower guide collection as coverage and tips start rolling in ahead of and after release day.
