Speaking in a new interview tied to the promotion of his upcoming film The Last Photograph, Snyder was asked about the prospects for a third Rebel Moon movie. His answer was the kind of non-answer that tells you everything. "I don't know," he said, before floating the idea that the existing films would need to build more of a groundswell of support before a sequel becomes realistic.

What Snyder actually said, and what it means
Here's the thing: Snyder's tone has shifted noticeably from where he was roughly a year ago. Back then, he framed the pause as intentional, describing his work on an LAPD SWAT movie for Netflix as a brief detour before returning to the Rebel Moon universe. He called it "uptown problems" and said he was letting the world "boil for a minute." That framing suggested a sequel was still on the table, just delayed.
The new comments feel different. Talking about needing a "groundswell" of organic discovery for the director's cuts is not the language of someone with a sequel in active development. That's the language of someone waiting to see if anyone cares enough to justify the effort.
Both Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (2023) and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver (2024) were hammered by critics. The extended R-rated cuts Snyder released, which he positioned as closer to his original vision, didn't generate the kind of renewed enthusiasm that might have pushed Netflix toward greenlighting a third film.
The co-writer's optimism versus reality
Co-writer Kurt Johnstad remains the most enthusiastic voice in the room. He revealed last year that the creative team had already outlined films 3, 4, 5, and 6, with Snyder having mapped out the entire world in detail. "We know where we can go, and we have very detailed outlines," Johnstad said, adding that it would take "some luck and an act of god" to return to that world.
That last part is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Having detailed outlines is not the same as having a greenlit production. Netflix holds the keys here, and the streaming giant has shown no public indication it wants to invest further in a franchise that underperformed with both critics and, by most available signals, general audiences.
A franchise stuck in neutral
The gap between Snyder's creative ambition for Rebel Moon and where the franchise actually sits right now is significant. He genuinely believes in this world, and Johnstad's comments make clear there are real stories left to tell. The problem is that belief alone doesn't move a sequel forward on a platform driven by viewership data.
What most players in this situation miss is that streaming platforms operate differently from traditional studios. Netflix doesn't need a box office number to justify a sequel. It needs watch hours, completion rates, and subscriber retention signals. If the director's cuts of Rebel Moon haven't moved those metrics, no amount of creative enthusiasm changes the math.
Snyder has other projects keeping him busy, the Rebel Moon universe has no announced momentum, and the most recent public update from the director himself amounted to "maybe if enough people discover it." That's a long way from a greenlit production.
