Netflix Moves Gaming Focus to Cloud and TV

Netflix is doubling down on cloud gaming for TVs, moving away from its earlier mobile-first approach. During the Q4 2025 earnings call, executives made it clear that television-based play is now the priority. The company wants to eliminate friction like downloads and hardware requirements, letting subscribers jump straight into games from their living room screens. Cloud delivery makes that possible, turning gaming into another layer of the Netflix experience rather than a separate product.

Co-CEO and president Gregory K. Peters said the plan is to expand cloud gaming to more members and regions, treating it as an engagement tool rather than a direct revenue source. Right now, about one-third of Netflix subscribers can access TV-based games, though that depends on whether their device supports the feature and whether they've updated the Netflix TV app.

Party games are working

Netflix has already seen strong engagement from titles built for group play. Boggle, Pictionary, and LEGO Party launched alongside Netflix's game packs, and early data shows these living room experiences hold attention better than mobile-only releases. Games designed for shared screens and casual multiplayer sessions are driving more interaction and better retention.

The cloud catalogue is set to grow in 2026, with a redesigned FIFA football game built specifically for TV play. That signals where Netflix is headed: social, accessible experiences that work across devices without requiring installs or specialized hardware. It's a model that aligns with broader cloud gaming trends and the kind of frictionless access that web3 platforms have been pushing for years.

Engagement first, revenue later

Peters framed gaming as a way to keep subscribers engaged longer, not as a major moneymaker. He pointed to the global games market outside China, which sits at around $140 billion in consumer spending, and acknowledged Netflix only captures a small slice of that. Investment in new titles and cloud infrastructure will scale selectively, expanding only when the company sees clear value for subscribers and measurable returns.

This approach echoes what Netflix outlined at the Game Developers Conference, where the focus was on unique experiences rather than catalogue bloat. Priorities include narrative-driven games, party formats, and kids' content, all optimized for cloud delivery. The goal is to reduce the gap between watching a show and playing a game, making both feel like natural parts of the same platform.

Cloud gaming fits the bigger picture

Netflix's push into cloud gaming is happening alongside other major moves, including the potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. That deal is still under regulatory review and faces competing offers, but the TV gaming expansion stands on its own. By leaning into cloud technology, Netflix can reach more devices worldwide and offer a smoother experience that fits the way people already use their TVs.
