Netflix Acquires Ready Player Me

Netflix has announced its acquisition of Ready Player Me, an Estonia-based avatar creation platform, as part of a shift in its gaming strategy. The company intends to use the platform’s development tools and infrastructure to create avatars that allow subscribers to carry their digital identities across multiple games. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Ready Player Me has raised $72 million in venture funding from investors including a16z, Endeavor, Konvoy Ventures, and individual investors such as the co-founders of Roblox, Twitch, and King Games. The startup’s team of approximately 20 employees will join Netflix, although only CTO Rainer Selvet among the founders will move to the company. Following the acquisition, Ready Player Me will wind down its services, including the online avatar creation tool PlayerZero, on January 31, 2026.

“Our vision has always been to enable avatars and identities to travel across many games and virtual worlds,” said Ready Player Me CEO Timmu Tõke. “Joining Netflix allows us to scale our technology and expertise to a global audience and contribute to Netflix’s gaming vision.”

A New Direction for Netflix Gaming

Netflix’s entry into the gaming market began four years ago with mobile games accessible via Netflix accounts. At that time, the company described gaming as another content category, similar to its expansions into original films and animation. Netflix acquired and licensed a number of game studios and titles, but results were mixed. While some well-known titles such as GTA: San Andreas attracted attention, others remained largely unnoticed, and many studio acquisitions were eventually shut down or returned to their founders.

In 2024, Netflix hired Alain Tascan, formerly of Epic Games, as president of games. Under Tascan’s leadership, Netflix has shifted its focus to TV games, including party games, narrative-driven titles, and kids’ games. Recent releases include Netflix Puzzled, PAW Patrol Academy, WWE 2K25, Red Dead Redemption, and Best Guess, a live party game featuring hosts Hunter March and Howie Mandel and a $1 million jackpot. A FIFA title is also planned for TV in time for the 2026 World Cup.

This move reflects a broader attempt by Netflix to combine traditional streaming with interactive gaming experiences. CTO Elizabeth Stone recently explained that Netflix is experimenting with real-time voting for live content, similar to interactive features used in reality and talent shows. These experiments aim to introduce a more interactive dimension to the streaming service while retaining its core audience.

Ready Player Me and the Future of Avatars on Netflix

The acquisition positions Netflix to expand avatar-based experiences across its gaming offerings. While the company has not shared a timeline for when these avatars will launch or which games will receive them first, the integration signals an interest in creating persistent player identities. These avatars may play a role in both traditional games and emerging web3-related gaming experiences, where players’ digital identities can move across different virtual environments.

By integrating Ready Player Me’s technology, Netflix is taking a step toward creating a more personalized gaming experience on TV platforms. The move also aligns with its broader strategy of expanding interactive content and exploring how audiences engage with its platform beyond passive viewing.
