If you've been sitting through Summer Game Fest week after week hoping Nintendo would finally show its hand, the wait might almost be over. Multiple insiders are pointing to a Nintendo Direct happening as early as next week, which would slot it right at the tail end of the summer showcase season.
The timing lines up. Nintendo has historically used June as one of its three anchor Direct windows each year, alongside February and September. That said, the company has been unpredictable lately. Last year saw Directs in March, April, and September, with February skipped entirely. This year, February was also a no-show. So the June slot isn't guaranteed, but the momentum behind this rumor feels different.

The insiders making the call
Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb, speaking on his podcast Last of the Nintendogs, said he's heard "Tuesday" as the target date, specifically "Tuesday morning," which would align with Nintendo's established 6am PT / 9am ET presentation window. He did add that "things get a little messed up" and Wednesday remains a possibility, so don't book time off work just yet.
Separately, prominent Nintendo leaker Nate The Hate, who built serious credibility after his Star Fox prediction came true, has also signaled that Direct timing would be discussed in an upcoming podcast episode. Two independent voices pointing at the same general window is about as close to a confirmation as you get before Nintendo itself says anything.
What could actually be announced
Here's the thing: the content question is arguably more interesting than the timing. Nate The Hate's track record includes two heavily discussed leaks that haven't materialized yet: a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, and a new Switch Sports title. With his Star Fox leak already confirmed, the pressure on those remaining predictions is real.
The Ocarina of Time remake has taken on a life of its own in the community. A former Nintendo marketing lead has gone on record saying the company is furious about the leaks, which is its own kind of confirmation that something significant is in the pipeline. Nintendo rarely gets angry about things that don't exist. The Nintendo boss has also teased "titles beyond those already announced" for the Switch 2 lineup, which fans have read as a direct nod to unannounced projects like this one.
What most players miss is that a June Direct would also be the natural home for any Switch 2 software gaps that need filling before the holiday window. A remake of one of the most beloved games ever made would do exactly that.
How Nintendo has been playing things differently
The broader context here is worth noting. Nintendo has been experimenting with how it delivers news, dropping announcements like Star Fox and Splatoon Raiders through the Nintendo Today app rather than waiting for a formal Direct. Some observers took that as a sign that big Directs might become rarer events going forward.
This rumor suggests otherwise. A traditional Direct, timed to Summer Game Fest, would signal that Nintendo still sees value in the concentrated announcement format, especially when it has major titles to reveal. The key here is that a Switch 2 Direct at this stage of the console's lifecycle makes strategic sense regardless of what specific games appear.
